Best gun for home defense?

LMAO.... when quasar posted this I was totally picturing old "boyz in da hood" and "menace to sosiety" flicks and how ballinouttacntrol would be using his G grip at a shooting range... Your response had me sides splitten.
I had the same thoughts cept it was petspoiler using the g grip

It is not SOP. It's more effective than preaching center mass but it's not Army doctrine. I just got out of the Army in June and for my last rotation on the road at Ft. Bliss we carried hollow points. Not sure if our post was one of the first to implement it or what but we definitely carried hollow points. Really crappy hollow points.

Typical army bs, why doesn't that surprise me? I've never carried hollowpoints on duty at my three posts as an MP, Ft Leavenworth, Ft Sill and Ft Wood. Granted the past two years I've been a DS and then staff, but I'm sure I know I would have heard something about it from my troops.
We do teach new MP troops failure drills with the M9 that involve two in the chest one in the head. We started that nonsense in early summer 2011, I was on the committee that helped to redo Range 22 for the new combat qual at Ft Wood when we rewrote the TSP. An important difference I probably should have pointed out is that it is intended for the combat qualification course, not L&O ops.

Imo a lot of police/law enforcement have a crappy shot, maybe its adrenaline, maybe pressure or lack of skills, either way a lot of them use hollow points because it doesn't ALWAYS penetrate secondary objects, in my eyes less experienced marksman can use this type of ammo and essentially do less damage to civilians and less potential for unwanted stray bullets, but I do however think fmj in the right hands is just as effective if not more effective if you put the bullet where it needs to be, and you being trained in the army and a mp obviously have skills that ordinary untrained gun loving forum Americans don't have but read about and think they are Chuck Norris!
I look at HP/jhp for home defense and copper coated lead for range use (way cheaper) as my glock never leaves my home, it is there to protect it and those who are in it. You put a fmj thru my wall its likely to say hi to my neighbour, a low velocity J/HP on the other hand will certainly expand to an extent Atleast giving the round better chance of not exposing secondary harm!

To be honest, I'm ready to get out. I HATE having to move every two years. I haven't seen my family over the holidays for seven years. That's why I was a dirty little post whore on Christmas day lol.
Most troops aren't very good shots. Most civilian cops aren't very good shots. The difference comes from some people doing a job that calls for them to use a weapon and having a passion to do so. Those are the ones who excel. All too many soldiers are content to just do the minimum of their twice annual required qualification, they don't bother doing combat quals or SRT or active shooter or stress fires or any other high speed crap that people imagine when they think of the military. That stuff's available and certainly will help your career, but a lot of joes are perfectly happy to just get by, just like any other person in any other job. I enjoy that stuff and I'm happy to put as many rounds downrange as I can at the army's expense. Ammo isn't cheap lol.
As for the hollowpoints, I'm soaking up what everyone's spilling. I really am. I just have a preference for ball. A large portion of the reason I have that preference is because the weapon I carry personally is a 1911. Maybe I'm just an old codger, but I feel that a weapon and round combo that's worked for 80 years for the army will work fine for me.
That explains a lot. I was deployed for most of 2011 and busy getting out when I got back. Training and doctrine changes take a bit to get all the way out from AIT to regular units.
Most of our troops are bad shots because they only get to shoot the M9 TWICE A YEAR. Ours didn't even do a paper qual at different distances. We did pop ups and then called it a day. Nobody gets good shooting something twice a year. Budget and training time constraints is the BS excuse that we got. Plenty of M9's out there ready for the scrap heap too. Some just never worked right.

Many 1911s dont function well on hollow points. They do make expanding fmj by the way.
I still stand by, just because the army is restricted by the hague convention doesnt mean you have to. In the end, use what you feel comfortable with.
I will say this. FBI abandoned the 10mm for a reason. And it wasnt because of being ineffective
