Pump Failed while Away for Christmas - Lost My Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Same thing happened to me except it was me del. He burrowed under my airstone and it got undone so it rose to the surface. I lost my 2 kenyi's 2 Parrot cichlids and my red-tail shark. Thats why i'ms sticking to polys if something goes wrong they can get through it.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts!

Having only been serious in the hobby for a year and a half, I hadn't thought about redundancy of durable mechanics. My biggest concern had been power outage. My house has a backup generator and my tanks are on it. I got through Hurricane Sandy without drama.

I will have to look into more redundancy. My sump is not designed to accommodate two pumps. Perhaps a second smaller filter with aeration... We'll see.

A second HOB filter, sponge filter, or even a power head will help in the event your sump pump fail. As long as there is water movement in the tank it'll keep your fish alive for about 24-48 hrs

This is good advice.

On larger tanks I would reccomend using a large canister as a backup to your primary sump.

no tank sitter lol? gotta get someone good that knows how to trouble shoot tanks while your gone. when i was in college i had a friend watch my stuff over a break and he couldnt figure out to just flip a power strip giving a 30 gal power. Year after that i had a 210 go down over break from a 20" tiretrack eel stuck in an overflow pipe, huge mess alot of survivors though. There was a small fire in the powerstip of the 210 aswell. luckily overflowing tank water stopped the carpet from burning. Last but not least my cat unplugged my roommates 47 tall the third year lol. One choclate pleco survived that disaster and was dubbed "jeffery dommer" :)

Long story short get someone you trust to check in on ur place while your gone. its hard to find good help, sometimes you have to pay $$ lol
