Clown loaches in a 55 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had just said 4 because my 4 are absolutely happy and it would reduce the bio load. Also less fish means more time you could keep them comfortably in a 55. If you plan on keeping a bunch of cory's in there too the lower level of your aquarium is going to be really busy.

I had always heard that you should keep more than 4 but my LFS only had 4 so I bought them. I a year later they are still in doing great.

I happened to see you live in Illinois. I'll be moving back in a month or so. Where you Located? You never can have too many fish keeper resources in the middle of nowhere.

I currently live like 45 minutes from the town of Joliet. I know of a few places that sell fish that aren't chains. Even though the Petland there has some nice selections

That's cool. I'll be in the mt vernon/Fairfield area... Way down south. Closest lfs is about an hour away. I'll probably end up with a native tank. I'm half way there anyway.

55GAL 12inch of width = ample amount of turning radius for many years

CLs will never physically outgrow a tank like say a silver arowana would, but the 4' length will slow their growth long before the look "too big" for the tank and will ultimately shorten their lifespan. I've watched a bunch of healthy clowns in a 4' tank slow down and stop growing at 5-6" and none made it past ~10 years old, which when you consider they could love for 20+ years and get to ~12" is pretty poor IMO.

4' length will do for a while, but IMO if you want to do the right thing and keep them happy, healthy and growing then get them into a 6'+ tank with plenty of current by the time they hit 4".
