My female pink convict has laid eggs twice and both times the male just ignored the female and eggs. It seems they aren't on the same page. The male is not too old or too young (12-16 months old), so i'm not sure whats going on. Ordinarily I would pick up another male but he is a marbled and I want too breed to get this trait. Any advice, or will he get it right with time? I have bred convicts/fish for years and have never experienced this problem before.

Thanks

You have a number of choices:

1.) Add one or two more female pink convicts in, give the male more choice.
2.) Add something that will strengthen the bond of the pair, by giving them a common enemy. Stuff like cichlids for example. Specifically african cichlids. I find them to be best because there's no chance (well low chance) that the Convict would try to breed with an african, but because they're cichlids, the Convicts most likely would pair up and be aggressive towards the africans. Just select a few that are smaller than the pair and tada!
3.) Leave them alone - sometimes it takes a while, and sometimes the best remedy is none at all. Let them take their sweet time and work things out between them.

positive he is a male, the female laid a huge clutch today and I didn't see the male take interest. Didn't see him fertilize the eggs but I didn't watch the entire spawning and he is taking a slight interest in the clutch. We will see.

Assuming things are a bad start.....it might be a male but I would question that based on what you have said. I would vent it to try to make sure. I have not had to many Convict's but I would avoid assuming genders based on colors, traits and growth rates. Good luck.

Okay. How about this then. It doesn't have an orange belly. Ergo it's a male.

Coz hey guess what. That's how you can reliably sex Convicts. :O Be it striped or calico or pink. :O Omg mind-blown.
