I'm going to have to agree that maybe I'm better off without a top dweller as I do own and like shallower tanks. Next time I will more clearly state the intention of my post as well to avoid the "drama".

If you love the fish I would still reconsider. Legend says when an Arowana dies, it takes the place of its owners. Trust me I've lost a few expensive aros but it didn't stop me from getting my fifth one. We jus have to learn in this hobby you will have casualties. You do what you want and learn from mistakes. Jus remember opinions are like ***holes, everybody has one. Good luck

My first aro jumped after my dad left the lid to my tank open and our dog decided it would be a perfect snack. It was the most expensive snack he ever got. The silver aro I have now I bought about a year and a half ago at around 4 inches. He's now 20 inches and living with rays, a knife, a gar, and a few tinfoils. They all do fine together. I have glass tops and the weight of the glass is enough to keep the aro from getting out. I hear him thump against the top regularly but the lids never fly open. How big is the tank? Maybe time to upgrade to thick glass lids. Anyway sorry for the loss. Give it some time and you'll be itching for another aro!

You should give aros another try. Silver aros are too common and skittish imo. I'd rather get an african aro or a lei if you can find one and have the right tank for it. Silvers always try to jump out but the african aros I've had don't. Rule #1 with any aro though is to keep the lids tightly covered. I saw one guy with an aro tank keep 5lb. barbell weights on the lids so his jardini couldn't jump out.
