Hey

I have a 65 UK gallon tank with a 3D polystyrene background. The tank is a couple of years old and the background is now starting to show some signs of wear and tear. With this in mind and the fact that my fish have grown significantly since the tank was set up, I have decided to remove the background. It's very bulky and takes up a significant portion of the tank space, so I'm thinking that my guys will probably appreciate the extra space. My plan is as follows...

Fill the bath Friday evening with luke warm water and leave it overnight
Transfer the heater from the tank to the bath Saturday morning
Transfer the fish to the bath as soon as the temperature reaches roughly that of the tank
Syphon 3/4 of the tank water, leaving the gravel submerged
Remove the background from the tank - not sure how long this will take or how much of a mess I will make. Chances are, it's glued to the back of the tank
Refill the tank
Reintroduce the fish to the tank
I plan to finish this on the Saturday, so the fish should only be in the bath for a matter of hours

I have a few questions...

Will leaving the water overnight, be sufficient to remove the chlorine and any other unwanted additives from the water?
Should I treat the water I fill the bath with?
Should I leave my external filter running in the bath or will the bacteria be OK if the filter stands idle for several hours?
Could any residues of cleaning / bathing products on the surface of the bath be harmful to the fish? I plan to clean it first but I don't want to use bleach or any harsh cleaning products
How quickly is the heater likely to work on the bathwater? It's pretty cold right now here in the UK, so I'm not sure how cold the water will be on Saturday morning
How much is this likely to stress the fish out?
Finally, are there any flaws in this plan that I may not have considered?

Stock as follows...

1 X Tiger Oscar
1 X Firemouth
1 X Pictus Cat
1 X Bristlenose Pleco
1 X Green Phantom Pleco

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Steve

yes and resude in the bath can harm the fish dry soap dry chemicals, what i do when i clean my big 110g i clean it with some soap then i go over it with hot water then contiue to clean and wipe.. then i dry it with a towel to remove and extra soap that wasnt picked up/ wipe down with the rag.. Probally do a good deep clean on the bathtub.. i dont think keeping it on overnight is a bad idea.. close windows in bathrooms if you have any remove items that are close to the tub that you think maybe a threat to the fish.. make sure to turn off your ac or heater wich ever one you have one since there isnt going to be any roofing over the tub. But Good Luck Men, Maybe someelse can answer the rest. The fish will be pretty stressed but nothing bad.. just confused but its only temp so everything should go great.

+1

Also, you can siphon the water from your tank directly into the tub, and then you don't have to bother waiting for temps or chemicals to stabilize.

+3 and you can return the tote when your done...if your ghetto :D

Bathtub idea isn't bad. I'd def clean the hell out of it first and add prime to the water, but there's no reason why it wouldn't work for a few hours. If that 3d background is siliconed in, grab yourself a pack of razor blades before you start.

Thanks for the input guys, although I'm not familiar with term 'tote'. Am I right in thinking that this is some kind of plastic container? If so, how big are we talking? My main concern is that I don't know how long the job is gonna take - if the background is glued all the way across the back, it's gonna take time and make a huge mess. Thanks, Steve
