Fish have ich, need help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know most people would argue but I haven't had pick in over 6 years if that's any help. I would not use any chemical and get a few fresh cloves of garlic crush them and put them in the tank (1 large clove per 40 gallons). It will help there immune system and I would add the aquarium salt 1 tbsp per 5 gallon maybe a touch more. That helps to.

I'll get some cloves tomorrow. Won't hurt them if they try to eat it will it? (Because they will)

Nope let them eat it. I doubt they will eat it but it wouldn't hurt them. Leave the garlic in the tank for 5-6 days. Take out and see. Raise temperature 1-2 degrees per day until you get to 86. Ick can't survive at temps above 81. What size tank do you have? What's in it for fish? I have some more help if you have the right size tank and right stock!!!

The 90 gallon with 7 blood parrots and 1 sailfin pleco is the worst tank right now (sailfin seems completely unaffected). The other two tanks seem to be doing a little better. And thank you for the help, I've already raised the temp to 86ish...I hope I didn't do it too fast. Added the salt and put the carbon back in and everyone is swimming better.

Worried about this fellow, he seems to have the least of the spots on him but also seems much more affected by it, really stressed and scratchin on everything/breathing hard since this morning. I'm hoping he's just being a wimp.. :(

if you can and you LFS has any i would get 3-5 yoyo or Pakistani loaches they do amazing with cleaning off ick and keeping the tank see of any parasites as they seem to eat all that stuff. my father in law had ick on one of his syno. catfish and the loaches "cleaned" the catfish. As i sure you know that with scaleless fish you cant use any full strength chemicals. so they loaches will help with all your needs and they bring a ton of personality to your tank!!

The easiest thing to do is a large 75% water change while doing a good gravel vacuming, raise the temp in the tank to 86 and add 1 tsp of aquarium salt to every 5 gallons of water. every two days do another water change gravel cleanning and and add enough salt back to the tank to maintane the 1 tsp per 5 gallon level. This should clear it up in about a week or so. Ich will sometimes get worse before you turn the corner and starts to get better.

How sure are you the yoyo loaches are doing the job? This is ridiculous to me. They would not be able to bite off the parasites that are embedded in the skin. This is the first time in six years here on MFK that I have heard of this.

It seems as though almost all the spots are gone this morning. Gonna do a good vacuuming before work and add the salt back. The second tank still has spots but not quite as bad. This has been very helpful. I know their are a million threads about ich out there but I didn't know how to address coppersafe vs no coppersafe.

It sounds crazy but you could see the marks left by the yoyo/Pakistani loaches on the side of the syno. He never used any chemical or temp change and that tank is set to about 75. If it was in my tank I would have never made this assumption due to my temps being 81.
