Ideas for Oddballs in a 135 Gallon Tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's the scomb (which I have) that suffers from "sudden, unexplained death syndrome". The red tails are supposed to be much hardier. And there would be SO MANY TEETH!!!

Also, nice that you have the chalceus. Those are some of my favorites.... shame the 2 that I found locally didn't survive the night with my bichir.
I will keep an eye out, but the only "Vampire Tetras" I've seen locally were Scombs, I believe, now that you mention it. I saw in your sig that you have one monster Scomb, so it must be possible!

I really do love the chalceus, but they are kind of fragile when small. I bought eight and one died by running into the magnet while I was cleaning the glass (no kidding) and the other managed to jump out of a very small gap in the lid (my fault). The six I have are about 6"-7" and fairly chunky.

African oddball tank. Ctenopomas and african brown knife for the middle, african butterfly fish on top, upper jaw polys on the bottom and a large school of congo tetras would look really cool in a planted tank. All will easily accept dry food.

Ctenopomas are easily my favorite fish and I really recommend them.

That actually sounds like a pretty cool mix and i think that The Wet Spot carries all of them regularly - I will definitely have to show this to the wife.

Has anyone mentioned a solo Puffer, Dan?
Not yet, but I have been thinking it. I would want it to be a pretty good sized one though. I used to do saltwater and loved my puffers!

That's kind of where I was leaning. Kids would love it. Fahaka?

I think a Fahaka would be great. I am tempted by the Mbu at TWS, if only I had somewhere for it to go next....

How about a nice group of Parambassis pulcinella? Or some of the not very common Synodontis spp., such as angelica, brichardi, decora, clarias, granulosa, flavitaeniata?
Interesting!

Not a fan of solo tanks.... get some clown loaches, bgk, SD's and flagtail maybe some discus or Angelfish?

My wife mentioned CL's.;)

I was looking at The Wet Spot's updated stock list and they just got in Fahaka Puffers, $50 at 4"! Can they do tank-mates at all or would it be a one-fish-tank?

Fahaka's are mean. It would probably have to be a solo fish

They had two large ones (10"+) at the LFS as well as a small 3.5"-4" one. They are pretty cool, but they were a little inactive for my wife. The small one was kind of skinny and lethargic, so I decided not to get it (yet).

I do finally have the tank empty of fish. :headbang2

Yesterday I had a great trip to The Wet Spot, I met up with one member (aclockworkorange), randomly ran into two others (cavamart and golondrocus) and dropped off a filter for another (crimsonfog). We bought four Fancy Goldfish for my wife's tank (65G hex) and for my son's 10G hex we picked up three more male Guppies (for a total of six) and a Black Kuhli Loach. My daughter screamed her head off when we finally had to leave after almost an hour at the store - she is ready for her own tank at 20 months!

No monsters for the 135 yet - I only get to stock a tank every few years, so I really want to consider my options carefully. My wife liked the Oscars and Clown loaches, which is interesting as these are both fish I have never kept. I am a little hesitant about Oscars, though, as I really want at least one of my tank to not be stocked with SA cichlids....

I might have to start saving up my pocket money - they want $350 for the big guy! They did say that they had some other small ones at the warehouse, so I am thinking about getting one after they have settled in a little (they just got them in this week). I have read that they will grow pretty quickly the first year of life.

The Fahaka is still at the top of my list, but I am also considering a Silver Aro (I have a home for it when it grows out) or a school of Loaches (maybe some Datnoids as well?).

Again, I am actually enjoying the selection process and have no hurry to fill the tank, so this could take a little time. I hate to draw out the thread, but I promise I will update it when I do buy!
