I am getting rid of the last five cichlids this weekend, and then I will have to answer that question for myself....
My wife is also wanting to help decide (which is actually a good thing) so I really need to go over all the suggestions with her and our friend Google Images.
What about a few Red Tail Payaras? They aren't supposed to grow too big or too quickly. Not sure how long it would take to get them off live, but it can be done.

I like big Characins - I have a Flagtail and six Chalceus. It would be cool to have something with teeth like that but I have always thought that they are sort of hard to keep alive long term?
That's the scomb (which I have) that suffers from "sudden, unexplained death syndrome". The red tails are supposed to be much hardier. And there would be SO MANY TEETH!!!
Also, nice that you have the chalceus. Those are some of my favorites.... shame the 2 that I found locally didn't survive the night with my bichir.
African oddball tank. Ctenopomas and african brown knife for the middle, african butterfly fish on top, upper jaw polys on the bottom and a large school of congo tetras would look really cool in a planted tank. All will easily accept dry food.
Ctenopomas are easily my favorite fish and I really recommend them.

How about a nice group of Parambassis pulcinella? Or some of the not very common Synodontis spp., such as angelica, brichardi, decora, clarias, granulosa, flavitaeniata?
