Stocking suggestions for 125g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think you could pull off 4 geos, 2 sev, 4 keyholes & a dozen corys in a 125 with no problem. The thank is underfiltered IMO and will require twice weekly water changes. If going the HOB route 2 AC110's would be a better fit. Then down the road use the 2 AC70's on the 90. I use PFS with my geos. I was never fond of black sand but you could mix 25% black with 75% PFS for a nice look. Anyway it's your tank you have to look at it so use what you like. GL & post some pics when you get it up and running.

Great idea. Had not thought of using the 70s on the 90g in the future. Perfect. :)

I will definitely go with the geos then. They will definitely add some much needed color to the tank. :)

So the sand color really doesn't have much effect on the fish?

My Geos do fine and look ok on PFS.

I wonder if a firemouth would be peaceful with 2 severums in a 125? Blue acara? geo's? What you've described is more of an angelfish type of setup. It would definitely have a better flow to it with angels than bottom dwelling cichlids. My 2c

I was thinking about other options for you and another good cichlid candadate for your tank is a Krobia Xinguenses. They stay within the 6" range not very common and very colorful I've also had them in planted tanks with no issues. I would be careful with any small tetras that can fit in thier mouths however but larger tatras are completly ignored. A couple of vendors have these available now.

Top picture is male and the bottom picture is a female with Juvis. They are excelent parents.

My first impression was that the poor fish was all cut up. LOL I like the red coloration, but the girlfriend has made up her mind that the red head geos are a must. LOL And comparatively, I must say I like the look of the geos more both in coloration and body shape.

Plus I really want black sand for substrate and I like the idea of having the geos sifting it so gasses don't build up (though of course I will still get in there every 2-3 weeks and give it a good sifting as well). I think I am going to go with the Black Diamond blasting sand from Tractor Supply. I have read a lot of reviews and most say it is safe for sand sifters. And some who saw injury were quick to blame the sand when the issue was revealed to be something else later on.

+1 to everything Aquanero said. Def go with 2 110s on that tank. I use PFS, I like the look and its cheap. 50lb bags are $8 at Home Depot/Lowes. I think turq sevs & red heads would make a really good looking display once they are adults. I would go w/ either the red heads or key holes, IMO when you start to get alot of species in a tank it turns into a jumble.

I will give the keyhole, severum, geos tank a try. If it fails, I always have my two 55s as backup to remove either the keyholes or the geos to. Then I will still be able to keep all the beautiful fish I want! :) If it goes south, I think I will remove the keyholes to their own tank with some angelfish and keep the severums with the geos while adding 2-4 more geos.

I have decided I want to give the keyholes their own tank, so I am going to have the 4 keyholes in a 55 with 8 cories and a school of 8 Australian rainbows.

So my current stock list will look like this:
2 severum
6 geo red head tapajos

I left the 12 cories out because I think there will be too much food and space competition between 6 geos and 12 cories. Plus the geos will be sifting through the sand, so I don't really need a scavenger that much.

What can I add in with my geos and severum that will occupy the middle and/or upper layers without creating aggression with the severum? I would like something that reaches 5"+. I know festivum are an option, but I would like to see if there might be something out there with a little more color. I know angels are a colorful option, but I already have baby Philly blue angels growing in a 20g destine for a 55 of their own (and hopefully breeding as well).
