Turns out you guys were 200% right! He didn't get out-competed for food by the Geos ;-)
However, he was SO hungry that he got really pushy during feedings. Having figured out that the other fish were indicating Where the food is, at first he just joined in, but started getting agitated & aggressive. It was scary bcuz he opens his mouth huge and clamps down on top of Geos' backs. didn't bite down hard, he kind of "moved them" out of his way (?). His more frequent pushy moves are more like speed bombing.
SO, now I break massivore into 1/4th pieces for him. He has to eat SOooo much before he will calm down.
He acts aggravated until he gets "Full enough".
It works with one day lighter feeding, & the next day heavy. but to him "light" means about 3 & he's not totally content. The next day he wants like 6 or 7. Honestly, I'm sure he'd eat more. but 6 or so calms him down. I hope it's not too much? I swear he is growing.
Maybe he wasn't getting much at the lfs.
He is in the 180G now. I've never seen a fish party so much as when he got in the big tank. The other fish were a bit hesitant, but not him. He explored every inch & then swam fast, back & forth, up & down for a Long Time. He does some of that every day. the current is actually more than I wanted, but he gets plenty of exercise.
Bottom line, I'm concerned about this being too much food, but it calms him down in community. Too Much?
The pellets don't sit there at all. he's like a high power vacc, they're gone as soon as he finds them.

That sounds awesome. I thought BGK were reclusive?

well, are half a dozen massivores too much food for him, or ok? he is an absolute PIG.
the lfs owner thought he was about 8 inches, but he's bigger than that & seems to be growing before my very eyes.

Too much of anything is bad, so I think the first concern with too much food is fatty liver disease.

Mines is about 12" long & gets pretty aggressive when he eats also. He'll grab onto the dorsal fins of my Achara Catfishs when they gets to close to where ever it is he's eating. My Achara's are nearly double the size of my BGK, both of them. Originally, I didn't think that he'd be able to hang with my Achara's during feeding time, but that couldn't been further from the truth. He does what he wants, goes where he wants.

does yours put his mouth down over their body, not just the dorsal fin... this is the first one I've seen do that, it surprised me. it hasn't harmed them, so far. yours either?
does yours have to eat a huge amount of food before mellowing out? If I don't give him lots of massivore, he doesn't settle. he will get more agitated as the days go by. that's why I think he really is super hungry & not only reacting to feeding time. NO way is he satisfied by only the NLS fed to the rest of the tank.
Perhaps a growth spurt causing it?

Nah, no damge. My achara's are at least 2 feet long by now and outsize my bgk by far. He can only really grab thier dorsal fins cause the achara's backs are so wide.

Shoot... I wish I could get my BGK to be a little more aggressive with the eating. Seems like a good problem to me! Mine only likes shrimp pellets and bloodworms but he does eat out of my hands! ;)
