I would recommend looking into Noeprodigy's 600 gal build. You might scale it down a bit though. LOL Go with the Ultima 2000 and an FPI inline filter housing. The FRI uses filter socks and is easily changeable. It's a bit pricey, but worth it IMO. Of course, if you do some Google'ing, you might be able to find a cheaper option than the FPI brand.

Well designed sump would be my choice. Id probably still have a fx5 running on the side just as extra filtration. A small electric generator would be smart for power outages.

I am doing a sump with a closed loop system off the sump to bio reactors.
A sump will never flood IF the overflow is done properly.

It really comes down to how much room you have to work with. Where would you put something as big as the Ultimate II ?

I am going to use (4x) Big clear 20" water filter housings plumbed in parallel and run in reverse flow for my bio chambers, with a super porous media like Seachem Matrix

out of my league but here as I have never had a tank that size and only filters I have are HOB and fx5's this is how I see it
sump they are customizable but can be load
canisters are good and only a hassle once and a while
the ultra II is priced high but good (and if you get 4-6 fx5s it probabley would be the same price

Canisters would be a nightmare!! I'd look at the WLim glass bead filters if you're in the US (where is HULON?!), the ultimas are good but as Pacumom said they will most likely need additional mechanical filtration.

I'm going with a sump for my similar sized tank as the big bead filters aren't readily available here, plus they're simple and efficient and easily customised.
