Been a while since Ive been on here but I would like some suggestions for my 90 gallon that aren't your ordinary cichlids. By that I mean, Ive kept Dempseys, GT's, Cons, Firemouth, Salvini Etc...

Here's why:

2 weeks ago I did a 70% water change. Typically do one every 2 weeks on this tank. Ive had my Male GT for 2 1/2 years now and he's 9 1/2 inches. So during that water change I unplugged the heater bc the water level was causing it to crackle and I didnt wana to break it. Well, I was stopping by each night bc Ive been staying at my GF's house. So.... I didnt notice the water temp had fallen until 4-5 days later. I had forgotten to plug my heater back in. So I plugged it back in right away

Well, I never even thought about heating it up too fast and it went from 65 degrees F to 82 F overnight. Ick started to form and I treated it. Dosed, waited 48 hrs per the directions, dosed again per directions, waited another 48 hrs. Then did 30-40% water change. Fish started looking better but then got worse. Dosed again 2 nights ago and yesterday after dinner I went to check on them and my GT is in absolutely HORRIBLE condition. He's a goner and Im pissedat myself for making such a stupid mistake. I treated again last night but if he hasnt improved Im going to Euthanize him because he's really... THAT BAD

I feel awful telling this, but figure I need to have a plan B if he doesnt pull through

Ive considered firemouths, salvini etc.... but am thinking larger like Freddy's or Carpintis/Texas --- WHat would you guys do if you had a 90 to work on??

Thanks!!

The rest of my stock includes:
10" Royal Pleco
3 Bushy Nosed Pleco's
2 Clown Loaches
5 Tiger Barbs
6" Gold Nugget Pleco (5 yrs old died yesterday)

first things first ... take care of the stock that may survive ... good luck...

Festae maybe? They're not your ordinary cichlid, you could keep cichlids from the Uruguay region... as they aren't all that common. When it comes to picking a cichlid for any tanks, there are many many options. Either way, good luck with what you've got going, I hope everything gets better.

FESTAE = GREAT FISH..... my personal choice might be synaspillum... with a catfish tankmate..

Since you mentioned carpinitis, another member of that family is Herichthys Deppi - really gorgeous fish and you could do a pair in there. All strains of carpinitis look great though.

Istlantum look great too and would work. Could probably fit most types pf vieja/paraneetroplus, but pairs would be a little cramped.

Perfect size for flowerhorns too if you're into hybrids.

Don't beat yourself up too much about the heater either. Screwing up is just part of fish keeping. I think most all of us have killed fish due to leaving the tops off(jumpers), forgetting to use Prime or unplugging heater/filter.
