2 male Severums showing breeding behavior :S

Yes, you can have same sex pairs. The gold may also be a female.

She's not too small to spawn, btw, depending on her age. I've had tank-bred severum females become sexually mature as early as 6 months old. One of my Heros severus pairs started spawning at about 4" and producing fry. Luckily they continued growing and they're now about 8".

I think the gold could very well be female (you did say in the previous thread that it was male Ryan! lol)

If so i'm in a predicament cos my daughter has already named it and says its hers, but i only want to keep males, so i might need to talk her into letting me buy a few more baby gold sevs make sure i get a male out of it, they are impossible to sex at 1" as they are in the lfs.

Good luck with that. They are quick growers so you could actually earn some store credit off the grow-outs after you decide which one you really want to keep.

Yours all look male, have you actually bred the ones pictured?

I always thought the facial markings meant male, except in Severus, looks like 'red' markings on the face mean male as far as golds go.

Yes, I still think the fish looks male. But with golds and super reds it's tricky, as I've said in other threads, because for some reason the females will occasionally develop facial markings. I'm not sure if this has something to do with inbreeding/line-breeding or the genetic make-up of the fish, but super red females almost always have spotting on their faces. It would stand to reason that this happens in golds too, since super reds supposedly came from line-breeding golds.

But I guess there is still a chance the gold is a male if you didn't see eggs.

Theres eggs today :( god damnit tahts the 4th gold i have gone through trying to get a male :( and the 4th my Super Red has bred with.

Most people are happy when their fish breed. LOL! I figured you had a male and a female from the beginning. That is why I told you to vent the fish.

I hate it when they breed because i'm trying to have a peaceful Severum (all male) community with 4 Sevs in a 90, as soon as my Red Spot breeds it all goes crazy, Severums are worse than Convicts for breeding ime.

You could always just pull the eggs each time they spawn. They'll calm down in a day or so. The problem is you'll probably have more eggs in 7 - 10 days.

Ok my Red SPot Severum has now bred with my female Rotkeil lol thats the 5th female he has bred with.
