Came home to my entire tank dead

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, tomorrow will be full tank detox.

Not entirely sure how to stock, if I go the same route that I was trying for or something different all together.

if your other house did not have a softener and fish were fine i would not use it... they are not meant for fish tanks and do not soften the water the way peat moss would

Well I rent so it's not like I have the option of taking it out, I do however have the option of not filling it with salt and thus not using it. However the area I live in has hard water so over time it damages appliances.

I wonder if there is a water line in the house that doesn't get put through the water softener though - like in the utility room there is a slop sink.

I"ll have to take some readings when I get my test kit back to see if all facets in the house are the same.

A water softener simply exchanges the calcium ion for the sodium ion. Most fresh water fish will live quite happily with calcium, as it is a buffer against acidification. Sodium is another story.

Hard day for fish today, woke up to my bichir who 1/2 swallowed my BGK twice the size of him, both died in the process.. $40 bucks all i one night. water parameters? how old is the tank? was it fully cycled?
i bet i can beat you....$225 in one night

In the past I know I have done water changes with salt in the water softener. I'm 99.9% sure that the first time I initially filled the tank there was salt in the water softener.

With that said, looking for some opinions....do you think it was because I did several water changes with no salt in the softener and then filled it up and did a water change that caused it OR the fact that I did a water change so soon after filling the water softener?

I feel your pain. I'm glad you have a lead on what caused the demise of your stock as you may be able to prevent it in the future. I lost a reef tank last weekend, about 80% of the inhabitants died. I don't know the reason it happened. For me it wasn't the money loss that I cared about. It's the loss of all the live creatures I was responsible for and not knowing why.

good luck on your new set up.
