TSN in 250 gallon concrete pond?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im just going to come out and say I've seen large tsn in tanks with alot smaller dimensions than your pond.. do i agree with it? Heck no... but those large cats that were crammed in a 210, 240, 180 gallon tank im sure would love to have been in your pond... will it survive and grow in your pond, yes in that case you can have a tsn. Will it be the happiest fish in the world with unlimited space? Probably not. Now the decision is yours

A tsn would live happy in that tank for a few years. So many people are crazy with tank sizes. And what can be kept in it. Your pond is huge compared to most tanks I have seen tiger shovelnose in hell id get a couple of them for in there and sell or trade them after they get to big.

Can he keep a tsn in there, yeah he could. I am going to say why would anyone recommend a fish that will out grow a tank? There are many other similar options that won't.

Op don't get a tsn to put in that pond. If you are going to make a larger pond then sure. Trying to find someone with a tank large enough to house your big cat is hard, I have done it. Go with a mid range cat, there are many to choose from.

I didn't recommend the got one and I was straight forward in saying he wont be raising a happy fish. All I was getting at is the footprint of his pond is alot better than the small tanks I've seen them crammed in where they couldn't even turn around.

A marbled achara catfish may be a good option for that pond or something along those lines. I think they stay around 2 ft

Yours and Billy's post come off like it is fine. The fish might not be happy but it is doable. I disagree with doable unless a bigger pond is in order. Since there is no mention of a larger pond, I would not say for a few years.

An acara, tig, juru or any similar sized catfish. I recommend the op to look at planetcatfish.com. there he can look at different fish and find one he likes that will be a proper max size for the pond he has.

I guess petshops shouldn't sell them then because 95% of people keeping tsn have less then a 250 gallon tank.

That is the wrong attitude to have. Pet shops should be able to sell any fish in the world. It is up to the buyer to be a responsible buyer and know the requirements of the fish your getting. IMO if you can't research a pet before you buy it you don't need to have any pets. Simple as that. If I am going to get a gaboon viper I am going to research all about it, were anti venom is and how to keep anti venom in home. I am not going to just go to the reptile show on a Fri night and bring one home and then ask... now what?
I can continue but do to some things going on right now I won't.

I will say this though, congrats to the op for actually asking about it before doing it. Now he can have happy fish and not be in a situation with a fish he has grown attached to and has now were to put it.

Oh well, since TSNs are out of the question, what about tank mates for oscars. I could pull off 4 oscars and a clown knife right?
