Sorry for your loss but I kinda thought this would happen. So far with my experience with gars, they are pretty adventurous with their food. They will try to eat even if they are just slightly hungry. They are very much like Oscars with bigger eyes than their mouths.
Sorry, but I call it the way I see it. We put these fish in the situations they are in, when they go bad we should feel like crap about unless we don't care if the fish is killed off. I don't keep gars because of the research that Ive seen says it would be a bad mix, too much risk. I do have other fish that are at risk in my tanks, if I loose them it is expected and I wont feel sad about it, but I sure as heck won't risk something I care about.
Here's how i see it...you're speaking about something that you know nothing about! All of mine or anybody elses research suggests that gar and aros are perfectly suitable tankmates. Do YOURSELF a favor and do some research. In 10 seconds i can type "gar arowana" into a youtube search and see dozens of examples of these fish co-habitating perfectly.
