Pbass are very messy especially Tem because of their size. As they get bigger it will only get worse.
My opinion is the sand is not helping the cloudiness. Gravel tends to hold down/trap more of the waste in between water changes. Sand swirls around grinding the poop and releases it. Did you have sand in your old tank?

ive had this sand in the tank since day one, and even when i had oscars which are also very messy it would be crystal clear in the tank
