Thinking of adding an Oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
An Oscar might be too aggressive and may kill the angels. A 75g is too small for an Oscar IME, but if you get one don't waste your money on power filters. I would get canister filters like Rena xp3 and as many as you can afford. Expect to do a lot of water changes too.
A better tank mate choice would be geos.

Why would you get an xp3 with an actual flow rate of 200 gph when the ac110 is easier to maintain and filters at 500gph?

Canister filters hold more water volume and beneficial bacteria. I've been there and done both. Huge difference. Aquaclear 110 suck. They break easily and forget using sand w/ them. I've had 3 AC 110s.

IME the combination would work. I have 2 wild caught oscars with 3 angels and some other fish in my tank. The oscars are bigger and thicker but they never touch the angels. The oscars just get aggressive amongst each other and the chocolate cichlids. I thinkmgrowing up together also helps.

I've never mixed oscars w/ angels, but I had a 13" Oscar that would beat on 6" silver dollars. This Oscar would knock the lid of tank off and one day I found a SD flopping on the ground. I will never put a fish of that size in a 4' tank again. It's not fair for an active fish like that to be in a small tank like a 75g.

If it reaches sexual maturity it could kill the angels, but if he grows up with them then you will have more of a chance of the combination working out.

Good Luck!

behaviour wise they could work out but a potentially problematic time would be feeding, this is when oscars realy show their character. they are pushy and confrontational and angels prefer to eat in a more reactive way.

oscars are such characters that each one behaves differently, some may be fine but then some others could take real exception, i have a pair and the only fish they tolerate is a 15 inch plec. everything else was harassed constantly (even big oscars are suprisingly agile) or just bullied off food. i wouldn't keep them together
