Would start my own thread, but lots of eyes on this one and seemingly a lot of xp with JDs... I have a female JD that I want to pair up with a larger male i just bought.. my question is what is the smallest that they will start laying eggs? She is 3-3.5 inches and most of the time is jet black, has a dark blue "beard" and eats ravenously like my other female cichlids have done prior to laying (so much that i question weather they are bloated but have always laid eggs and then looked normal).. she seems to be trying to get the males attention by "dancing" for him but i haven't seen him do it in return yet... before i added him she was nesting under a piece of wood.. now she just follows the male around. Still fat and eating a lot. Can she lay eggs that small? I've read 6" so i'm confused.. lol still kinda expecting to come home to her guarding a wad of eggs. There is a smaller JD in there that was added for a possible mate that she chases around mercilessly if it does not hide. Water quality should be excellent although i haven't checked it recently, not very much bio load for the 55g and it is moderately planted.

Yes she can lay eggs at this size. The first spawns will normally be smaller and fungus as they are a very young pair and trying to get the fertilization process right. But after that they will raise they're own. They are good parents.

The chase happens to all the pairs I select. And yes it is common for the female to chase the male relentlessly. Eventually the male will succumb to the females chase and will hopefully mate. Good luck mate!
