If dissolved organics is a problem, you can either get a larger tank or do larger/more frequent water changes. Here's another solution:

Again I have to agree with pacu mom.
Chemical filtration to me is just a crutch for other issues. The link pacu mom provided is a much better option overall. Skimmers are cheaper to run long term and less hassles.

Freshwater skimmers have always interested me.
You need a pretty massive system to make it worthwhile - not the most efficient in FW.
Its not that I dont agree with what you guys are saying - its just I feel as if a lot of people on here throw something additional in their cannisters just to give a little added "oomph".
Im not doing anything as of right now other than replacing my fine filter floss on my eheim.

Freshwater skimmers have always interested me.

You may be surprised then I bet how many people on here don't use something.
I don't think its about the size of the system but the amount of bio load on the system and the efficiency of the particular skimmer.

As previously stated, crispy water is all mechanical filtration and water changes. That being said, I do run chemi-pure in my tanks, probably out of habit more than anything. It was recommended to me about 15 years ago to run in my salt tank and I've been using it in all of my tanks since. I've never had any issues with clarity in any of my tanks, so I stick with it because if it ain't broke...
