SAN DIEGO (AP) — Seven people have been charged with smuggling bladders from an endangered fish in what authorities said Wednesday may be a growing international practice in which the bladders are sold for up to $20,000 each to be used in a highly desired soup.

ah well, say goodbye to another species.

Whales in Antarctica, shark fins, now fish bladders, crazy growing population. They have no sense of conservation at all. Well no one really does in a large scale but seriously asia whats with the cruel ways of obtaining "delicacies"?

So it doesn't even taste amazing, it's just some crazy old superstition that makes dumb rich people want to eat them!!
Yeah this is exactly what it is

question, How do they use animal parts from areas not around them, if this is such a old way of treating "X" why don't they use animals from around them not from around the world? Saying animals because they do this crap with non fish critters to.

I've always wondered about bear gall bladder as well. supposed to be some super medicine or something to Asians

I figured if there was something so special about them, you'd think advanced modern labs would have figured that out by now

I heard a guy say one time that he had bad stomach pains. and he drank a little bit of vile from bear gall bladder and it was so bitter he felt it go from his tongue all the way to his stomach and the pain went away. but I think it was just so nasty that it temporarily made him forget about the stomach pain. last I heard, he still has stomach pains

The problem with Chinese medicine so to speak is that is has such a long deep rooted history that spans thousands of years... so to try and change their way of traditional thinking is going to be hard and take time... although i'm sure with todays younger generation, they are most likely choosing western remedies over traditional Asian ones when available...

Although with that being said, i'm sure a lot of the people who drink these soups tend to be the extremely rich older women who are willing to try anything in order to stay young and beautiful... kinda like how western women would spend a fortune on plastic surgery to try and reverse the damages of time...

You think their sense of conservation is bad with regards to wildlife, do a little research into the mercury China puts into the world's atmosphere by melting "recycled" electronics.

How is a fish from Mexico part of thousands of years of tradition?

Still, that all makes sense. Hard to break something so engrained into someone's brain.
