About a month or so ago i purchased 4 tigerfish. 3 Goliaths and one Tanzaniae. They are in a 72x20x24 tank with 2 api xl cannisters, 2x 3200gph hydor circ pumps, and 2x 1400gph hydor circ pumps with a 200gal air pump hooked up to each one. here is a pic of the tank. it is painted black on 3 sides and the bottom. I also bought 4 tinfoil barbs to go in with them as dithers.

I ended up selling the smallest gatf because i feared the worst for it in a tank with another type of atf. They started eating pellets about 2 weeks after getting them and are now eating 4-6 jumbo carnistix each a day per fish over their two feedings (morning and night). they were about 4.5" when i got them.

They have put on about 3/4"-1" in a month. This is about the quickest ive ever noticed an atf grow. Also the more aggressive of the 2 gatf has gone a dark steel colour. It is the smaller of the 2 gatf but is always the first to eat and he defends his corner very readily against the other 2 atf. his fins are all black except for the bottom lobe on the tail which is red. the back is jet black an the sides dont have that "chrome" shine like the other.

I know the pics arnt the best but with the almost white water current in the tank its very hard to keep these guys still. if someone could confirm that it is the start of a black goliath id love to hear it. if theres another reason for the colour change id also appreciate any answer.

ps. it is not just from the lighting that the colour is different. im going to try to get a clearer pic of this guy.

These guys look awesome. Great setup

i see a distinctive color difference! Could be!

Maybe the black goliath is actually an unknown subspecie?

Hard to tell from the pics, face structure differs between each.
Better pics will chime in better answers

Black GATF are just a color morph of a regular GATF. The 'blacker' the water they are from the darker their color will be. It is not unusual for a large, wild GATF to have a significant portion of the top of it's body black. Even Jeremy Wade's fish was black on the top 1/3rd of its body before it started to die and turn brown.

The colors on your fish are not unusual. Unless you're very, very dedicated to maintaining a blackwater setup, the colors will fade over time to the typical chrome color of every other GATF.

Its also worth noting that this fish looks just like my Max at that size who also has a black stripe on his back, black fins and a black head.

The truly all black ones that Douglass Dann caught are special fish that were likely living in blackwater all their lives.

I'd very much like to see some better lighted pictures of that fish.

Well the one pic is of the tatf. And yea the mouth looks much different on the dark one. He just recently lost his first set of teeth. im going to end up selling 2 and keep one by its self so i have a perfect fish. If i do so however do u think it will lose its dark colour? Cuz i know with some cichlids an alpha fish or the aggressor will darken up quite a bit. Ill try to get a very clear pic of him tonight and one of the other one to really show the difference.

Nice tigers. By the way where did you get them from because I ve been looking everywhere for them? Maybe from someone here?
