this was my jag a couple months ago

If you get rid of the black gravel it will improve the color of your mayan and jag a bit. Looking good anyways.

I find it varies by species. Some look much better over black, others look worse. Geophagus 'Tapajos orange-heads' and Apistogramma cacatuoides come to mind as ones I've seen that don't as example.
