Wolf fish ID sticky prep thread, how you can help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lix,

If you really want to help, scouring through various scientific papers for me and posting links to them would be immensely useful. The stuff I post in my 'references' section on these types of threads is the stuff I read to put this all together.

I found this interesting, H. macrophthalmus is a junior synonym for H. aimara, but it is still considered a valid, separate species.

Not sure how much help this will be ,but from the max sizes of the hoplias genus I think I have a general assumption tank size for all of them
H. braziliensis 15cm 4x1
H. teres 20cm
H. microcephalus 35.6cm 4x1.5
H. panata 39cm
H. malabaricus 55cm 5x2
H. australis 44cm
H. curupira 75cm 6x3
H. lacerdae 75cm
H. aimara 120cm 8x4
and another little assumption, I think most of them prefer fast flowing waters. I know mala, curupira, and aimara like fast waters for a fact though.

It is likely similar to the way with ATF at first vittatus was a separate species, then it was a junior synonym for forskahlii, then it was valid again. It all comes down to actually reading the papers and figuring out what exactly is going on.

With VATF/FATF, the confusion came from the fact that VATF was called a junior synonym in 1986 in an English language paper, then reinstated as valid based on morphological differences and clear differences in parasites in a French language paper in 1989. This was generally accepted as valid but wasn't very well known until a 2011 English language paper clarified it based on genetics. And of course none of that was known in the hobby until a 2013 post on MFK.

ATF only has five currently valid species. Wolves have sixteen and they are just as convoluted and confused as ATF are.

This is why we have our work cut out for us! lol

lol If only it wasn't this complicated to figure out, but that what makes it fun.
I think of all of them the Erythrinus is the most screwed up. There are two valid species E. erythrinus and E. kessleri, two un described species E. sp. peru and E. sp. river tahuayo. Of the valid species there are at least three subspecies of E. ery, hence the three different names, and the holotype is missing for E. kessleri, and on top of that they might look incredibly similar to E. sp. river tahuayo.

I am not sure if this helps I have 4 9-10" Rainbow Wolffish living in a group. I do think I havew one dominant Male and a female with in the group. I have them in an extremely densly planted 120g . The have a diet of Nightcrawlers and silversides and will take large cichlid pellets ( I rarely feed them these). They have plenty of PVC caves and diftwood caves and can easily get out of one another's sightlines. This group have been together for over 1year. I wanted to add this to your info as all of the literature I have read states they can not be kept together. I believe this is becasue people who have tried this have not supplied the correct enviroment. What I believe to be the dominant Male and female have shown some interesting behaivior that I belive to be pre- spwaning behaivior. In addition to this one has very bright peach-orange coloration on it's flanks and the other is much more pale. Here are some pics.

Sorry, I don't have much to contribute. You can use my Erythrinus Erythrinus pic from a while back if you like.
