So, have been raising rays for awhile. Have had many litters born over the years.
Well I have a pair of Motoro's. They have had three litters of pups. Always small litters..
But my question is on the last pup that was born.

He was born around 7:30pm on 5-14 (a few days ago)
Was doing fine, swimming and active once he figured out what was going on.
He was moved into my ray pup tank. Divided so he could settle in.
He died today. 5-16... It happens and I know, can always explain it.

My question or just wanting opinions is this.
I noticed he was different when he was born.
His head was really humped up.
Eyes were on the side of his head.
He was around 2 1/2" to 3" when born..

So I kinda thought at first maybe it was just how he was in his mother.
Though he might flatten out.
I didnt mess with him since he was newly born, didnt want to stress him anymore than needed. So I just watched over the last few days.
Well he just stayed the same. So I figured, in time he might flatten out or thats just how he was going to be.
The eyes were the only real concern. Being really small and on the side.

Well after fining him today passed on, I was able to get pics and look closer.
Im thinking he was born to early. But I dont know. Out of all the pups Ive had born, never had one look like this before.
Have had short tails, bent tails, even a slightly batman ray born. (different parents on all three things)
But never one that had such a humped head and eyes so small and on the side.

So look at the pics, tell me what you think..
Just interested in everyones feedback.. <br>

Well first of all sorry this has happened, its a real shame considering how long the pups take to develop in the mother...very sad!

I have to say this is the first time I have seen this too, very strange! From above in your other thread this ray looked pretty normal but these pics tell a different story, the head is is very disfigured so no doubt the brain was in a very poor state when it was born, Moms been this rays life support system for some time by the look of it, this little ray had no chance once it left the mother from what I can see.

Thanks for posting and good luck in the future.

Nice parents by the way.

Kinda what I was thinking. I could just tell by looking at him from the start something was not right. Guess I was hoping for the best, as we all do.
Thanks for the post and info.

i dont know if it helps at all but if you think about dogs then in many litters one or often more newborn offspring will die (and often some days later) but the healthy ones remain.

maybe they are not so different to dogs. ... if the other pups survived im quite sure that it wasnt your fault. somethimes these things just have to happen.

out of interest, how much do you feed the parents ?

i to have seen this,i had a couple of henlei pups born like this many years ago, they to were early .
sorry for your loss,

Most certainly early but for me there is more to it than just that, was the egg sac attached? I have had pups so premature that they were still white when they came out, the eyes were not inline with the spiracles though, they were set high up on the head in typical fashion, however it is normal for premature pups to have a rounded more blunt appearance to the mantle (front of head).
