moving a tank need help/advice

Im thinking since the tank will have to be emptied to move, I'd save about a 5 gallon buckets worth of sand at the very very most... Give the tank a really good inside cleaning while its broke down. Add about 80-85% new sand and just add a top layer of what he saved. ESP since he will be using the same filters & quite a bit of the tank water.. Why not give it a really good clean, best time to do it right is when it's empty.
 
^ yes its a good way to clean the sand, but also a good way to lose a whole load of BB thats been growing on the substrate...

Infact, im almost sure if he replaced all or 85%+ hes going to end up with a mini cycle at the least...

Like homer already covered I will second.

Seems like a lot of people seem to forget how much beneficial bacteria live in the substrate. No other thing in the tank has that much surface area. Tossing out or cleaning the substrate just creates more issues. All you need to do is put it in some buckets. Cover it with tank water and keep it wet. It can easily live like that for 3 to 5 hours maybe longer. Keeping so much tank water to me doesn't make as much sense. The BB doesn't live in the water. Keeping a lot of it makes very little difference. I keep maybe 20 to 30 % max.

That's what I thought too, but yea there a lil bit of BB in the water column but the majority of it is attached to a surface to survive (rocks, substrate, drifftwood, inside of glass, decorations, plants etc etc) and I figure if I can keep about 25-30% of my tank water in a 55g raimn barrel it like doing a reg large water change like the fish are use to ?

Well all moved and tank is fully setup fish have even ate since being setup ! :) which is a good sign ! And kept all the sand good and wet with old tank water.... Didn't lose anyone yet either everyone survived being in coolers for the entire time, and also we had a mis-hap with my bro showing the neigbour the fish he had to open the one with my aro's and he jumped outta the cooler and flopped around down a step or two ! *smacks his forehead* he picked him up and got him back in the cooler asap, so far tho all is good tho and everyone is very active and hungry :)
