Did the other pair actively try to bring the few over with their fin movements, calling to them as it were?

Timing is critical for the other pair to see the fry as food or mistaken them their own fry. When the other pair has put on their breeding dress, the hormone has already pumped up, and their parental instinct has taken over.

It happened with mammal too, which is smarter than fish. I watched National Geo the other day. A lone African wild dog, whose pack members have all died off from desease, was so eager to start her own pack by adoping puppies from a jackel familty. She and Jackel parents jointly protected the Jackel puppies, and she even regurgitate food to feed the Jackel puppies who greeted her with joy. You have to see to believe it.
