I actually don't even own a gun. I agree with you, this thread is on the paranoia side and not a real sample of American society. I'm having a little fun feeding this paranoia.

I get a little freaked out every time someone knocks on our door, because NOBODY should be knocking on the door. A knock at the door means someone bypassed our gate. Fortunately, it's usually a relative or a neighbor. I always look through the window to see who is there before I open the door.
On the other hand, there is a house I would really really like to see inside. My father built the house 65 years ago. Every time we go to Hawaii, we stop at the house. Now, there's a swimming pool in the front yard, and the property is fenced with a locked gate....so I can't knock on the front door.....
The house behind us was my uncle's house. My father is 91 and is an invalid now. I would dearly love to see the house he built. Yup, if there wasn't a locked gate, I would definitely knock on the door and ask to see the house.
The only reason I'm cautious about opening the door is because I'm worried my building management will be there and see 505 gallons of water in an upstairs apartment 
Luckily that's only happened twice in 5 years and the first time I moved the tanks into my closet and had a friend babysit the fish, but that was such a pain I just let them in the 2nd time cuz it was just the maintenance guy (installing carbon detectors since I do my own repairs lol). But even they have to give at least 24hrs notice and all my friends/family would call before showing up and again from the front gate when they got here, so the only people that would be knocking unannounced are solicitors or missionaries. I would be pretty suspicious if the guy who used to live here wanted to see his old room tho... Im not that paranoid about burglars but I would probably wonder if he was making it up and definitely wouldn't let them in.
Btw for those of u who don't live in the US dont worry, its not so crazy here that u need to open your door with a gun in one hand and a german shepherd's collar in the other. There's worse neighborhoods than others but a lot of people I know dont lock their doors and they don't even have fences where my parents live on the east coast

Let me start this with a story. My ex and I had an apartment in a so-so neighborhood. Her thuglife brother was our roommate. He was an avid drug user and the reason we are now exes. He constantly threw parties that included friend of a friend random druggies coming and going as they pleased. This led to some POS kicking in my door while I was at work and stealing around $3k worth of electronics from me and about $2k from him. Worst of all they stole my brand new black on black on black old school K swiss shoes that took 6 months to find that I hadn't even worn yet. But they left the sticker that came with them grrrrrr...I digress. Having said that, I lived and learned. Got myself out of the situation. I don't own any guns, nor will I ever. My 2 lb yorkie isn't going to tear anyone limb from limb. And the only thing I might be holding when I DO in fact open the door for a stranger, is a bag of chips. Do you guys who supposedly answer the door holding a gun ever stop and think you might actually be crazier than the so called stranger at your door?
Not really.. I don't always open the door with 1 in my hand but I always have 1 on my hip concealed of course so no one can tell I'm carrying. I put it on everyday just like I put on clothes. It's become a way of life for me. Weather I'm going to the store, church, or just running errands it's always with me. To me it's more about being prepared than anything else. You never know what may happen but if for some reason I'm in a situation where some freakazoid goes crazy I will do everything I can to keep my family safe & secure.
good job ... that will teach em....actually it probably won't ... gotta be pretty dumb to break in a friends house....
Have you honestly ever had to use your gun? I could justify a tinfoil hat by saying better safe than sorry. Doesn't mean it is necessary. To each his own but saying you need to grab a gun to answer the door wreaks of "Doomsday preppers" to me.
