Have you ever haggled at a fish store?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that's not necessarily true. If there's no sale because you're haggling and won't pay the price they're asking, a small mom and pop store could lose their whole business (if enough people did this). These small store owners aren't driving Ferraris and making it rain at the strip club. I'll pay full price to my LFS because I'd rather go there than a chain store...

What's not necessarily true?

I think prices are too high so I don't buy, LFS gets no money from me but still has the potential for a future sale at full price.

I think prices are too high so I haggle, owner doesn't play ball, LFS gets no money from me but still has the potential for a future sale at full price.

I think prices are too high so I haggle and owner reduces price 10%, LFS gets money from me, but less than they would if someone was willing to pay full price. Space is cleared for new inventory. Potential for a future sale of new inventory at full price.

If enough people who thought prices were too high haggled instead of just walking out and buying somewhere else the store would make more sales and more money.

Do you haggle when you go buy towels at wal-mart? Do you haggle over the price of your meal at a restaurant?

I think reputable LFS has priced fish to cover their cost (fish, electricity, rent, employees, etc) and haggling cuts into their profit and maybe even their operating expenses. You're right, if they don't come down to what you want it's your right to walk away, all I'm saying is if everybody did this they would go out of business. If they have a fish that I want, I'll pay full price. If I think it's a ridiculous price then I won't buy it. If all their fish are way overpriced they will go out of business as they should because they're not smart, reputable businesspeople.

I know my LFS is reputable, so I'll pay what they ask if I want their fish. I like them, I want them to stay in business. Why would I treat them worse than all the chain stores I shop at? I surely can't cut 10% off their prices...

I think most fish stores ask too much for the fish they have. Especially in my area. If I don't like the price I ask what's the bottom dollar. If they say that is their bottom dollar I say ok thanks I can get it down the road cheaper. When I say that that usually changes their mind real quick!

I dont need to haggle also-im regular customer at lfs and get discount :) but in my opinion, fishes (especially exotic) and other animals should be more expensive because almost everyone can afford them and when they get bored with them, they set them free..so you end up with piranhas and turtles and so on in rivers and nearby where they shouldnt be..

You can show many chain stores the price at a competitor and they will match or beat that price. Many will also accept competitor coupons. Depending on what store you are shopping at you can sometimes get a discount as well. Talk to a manager at Sears, for example, and you can usually get a discount on their higher end appliances or electronics. It's not exactly haggling, but there are discounts to be had at chain stores as well. It's pretty easy to buy most things on sale or with coupons and get far more than 10% off at chain stores.

For restaurants, there's generally a line out the door and an hour or more wait when my wife and I go to eat and haggling wouldn't work because there are full-price-paying customers ready to take our table if we aren't willing to pay full price. My wife's big on coupons and getting whatever discount is available though. Again we usually get more than 10% off the original price.

To sum up my position on this subject, whether or not there is any negotiation on price, the seller and buyer must both find the price acceptable for a deal to be made. In an honest transaction (no fraud or misrepresentation) a buyer cannot rip off a seller, even if the negotiated price is far lower than the asking price, because the seller always has the right to decline an offer. The seller also cannot rip off the buyer, even if the price is much higher than market value, because the buyer has the option of not purchasing.

Actually I am a manager at a retail empire of sorts and you would be surprised how much "haggling" goes on.

If im buying a bunch of stuff or one really expensive item i will ask if i can have a discount, if they say yes, great, if not i pay the price since i want / need it...

I think the other thing to consider is that a fish sitting in a fish store for long periods of time is money lost for them. You have food cost, electricity, employee salary to clean tanks and change water.

dont forget also if something happens @ the store & the fish happens to die, they are out the fish & any money made from it.

I find that if you simply pay what they are asking for their fish and fish accessories, and you purchase from their business often, you will develop a better overall relationship with the people who run it and they may eventually giving you discount. Thats what mine did for me. I pumped about 600 bucks into their business from buying my tank and lights and decorations and fish etc. Now they put in discounts for me without even saying anything. I bought a fish the other day that was labeled $25.00 and they rang it up as $15.00.
