I was wondering, can I keep 2 dwarf puffers in a 5 gallon tank? If I plant it enough would they be alright there? Also, my tank is already cycled but I plan to replace the substrate, would it be alright to transfer the water to a bucket then remove the substrate then? Thanks!

For such a small tank if the filte is cycled i would just remove the water and everything else into another container replace substrate Nd put everything back.

As for care yes you can put two together. They usually dont bicker that much. Some plants and you have yourself a nice puffer tank :) oh and make sure you give them some snails to munch on.

Thanks a lot! I'm really excited abt the puffer tank. Theyre really cute lol. I wanted to add some soil to the substrate so I could plant some more plants. I guess I'll be moving the water and the filter into a bucket then keep it running while I prepare my new substrate. Thanks, man! :D

They really are best kept at a minimum of 3-5g ea. If you insist on getting 2, it's a MUST that you be sure you can sex then 1st & get 2 females.

I bought 5 for my 25g planted which was infested with snails, I now have just the largest male who killed all the others within 2 months. Like puffer punk said, definitely sex them and get two females. As for my one left, he rid the tank of all snails and has no issues with the other fish in the tank. Eats black/tubifex worms, snails, and I assume occasional dry food even though I have not seem him eat any.

Thanks! I'll see if I can get bigger ones so I can sex them. 2& is a fair price right? I'll be feeding mine some snails, bloodworms and maybe even mealworms?

Yes, I had a murderous male who killed off all new female tank mates. So I left him alone in his 10g, until he died of tumors. I now have a lovely trio, who greet me at the glass. So nice... Males are IDed by wrinkles behind their eyes. Be sure to bring a flashlight with you to the LFS to see them better. Try to pick more mature ones.
