http://www.floridasportsman.com/2012/10/04/exotic-redtail-catfish-caught-in-south-florida-lake/ lol, this guy's friend is really smart. "He pointed out that it is a fish normally found in South America, or (THAILAND)" WTH people stop releasing RTC. Good way to get severe restrictions put in place. Heck youtube even has plenty of vids of idiots releasing them.
The author is, in a way, encouraging more illegal releases - they excite him! He is waiting to see what else (non-native and exotic and invasive) finds a way into his lake...
-- so that the ecosystem is thrown even further out of balance,
-- so that the local nature and fish stocks are even more jeopardized by the bacterial and parasitic cultures the non-natives carry,
-- so that FWC spends our tax money to try and eradicate them,
-- so that, at the end, more bans are in place and the USA slowly turns into a nanny state that has to protect the country from its own people via placing more and more restrictions on what they can and cannot do...
On a different note, FishBase entry for the RTC says "The species is introduced but not established in Florida" (as I understand they are NOT referring to unauthorized releases but I may be wrong because my Fish & Wildlife Commission contacts say it has never been done by the FWC) http://www.fishbase.org/summary/Phractocephalus-hemioliopterus.html
I thought FishBase only mentions controlled, governmental introductions. Correct me, please, if you know different.
