http://www.floridasportsman.com/2012/10/04/exotic-redtail-catfish-caught-in-south-florida-lake/ lol, this guy's friend is really smart. "He pointed out that it is a fish normally found in South America, or (THAILAND)" WTH people stop releasing RTC. Good way to get severe restrictions put in place. Heck youtube even has plenty of vids of idiots releasing them.

The author is, in a way, encouraging more illegal releases - they excite him! He is waiting to see what else (non-native and exotic and invasive) finds a way into his lake...

-- so that the ecosystem is thrown even further out of balance,
-- so that the local nature and fish stocks are even more jeopardized by the bacterial and parasitic cultures the non-natives carry,
-- so that FWC spends our tax money to try and eradicate them,
-- so that, at the end, more bans are in place and the USA slowly turns into a nanny state that has to protect the country from its own people via placing more and more restrictions on what they can and cannot do...

On a different note, FishBase entry for the RTC says "The species is introduced but not established in Florida" (as I understand they are NOT referring to unauthorized releases but I may be wrong because my Fish & Wildlife Commission contacts say it has never been done by the FWC) http://www.fishbase.org/summary/Phractocephalus-hemioliopterus.html

I thought FishBase only mentions controlled, governmental introductions. Correct me, please, if you know different.

you know TBTB it wouldn't surprise me in florida especially after reading this lol.

Don't get me started.. I got into one heck of a discussion with some people on this subject .... fisherman.. IF it's not native it's invasive "Period"... Everyone who posts a youtube video releasing a fish or is caught imo should be charged federally w/ destruction of Us property or whatever they call it... because that's what happens. The animal even if it dies has the potential to do unknown amounts to harm to whats left of our native ecosystems.

As for the DNR intentionally releasing non-natives.. They're Idiots. They of all people should know better. There are other methods for what they need to accomplish aside from introducing non-native species to accomplish things. And it only says "Do as I say not as I do" to people in reguards to releasing/ect.

I'm just wonder if it was a recent release or was it there for a long time. I think the winter gets fairly cold there. If they can survive there over the winter, that means other similar fish can actually live in cold water. Maybe putting them in an outdoor pond will give people more options with overgrown fishes. I know plenty of members here face that issue. Maybe someone try it and let us know.

You cant fix stupid lol....this just doesnt help us at all with all the new bans hanging over our heads. Best part is people think there doing there pets a "favor" while putting them to a slow death when winter comes.

RTC will not survive even a 60 F water. The water in Great Lakes freezes over often. In any case, the "warmest" layer is at 38-40 F on the bottom as the water is the densest at that temp. As has been said - RTC cannot survive/establish in South FL! What's to say about more northern states? Even if it finds a nice and relatively warm discharge from a power plant on a river.

Plecos have been found to survive in Poland near the power plants in 7 C to 14 C water. But they are more temp hardy. RTC stands no chance.

I know exactly what you mean by this emotional statement but it is more fair to say it is ignorance and that can be fixed by education, advocating, raising public awareness, etc.

^True, should be starting from our LFS, or even boards for the wildlife that makes a prerequisite for LFS to be informed and to flow it out to the customers to be informed as well. Well just sayin, but that will take time, and a lot of hardheads are still there so...
