How to: Moving really big tanks??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's BIG LEAGUE....nice.....

Nope. It's super thick glass, and ridiculous bracing. There's more bracing than there is open top.

Really impressive and gutsy. I hope it's just fine and can't wait to see it.

Also, I love glass tanks, but I never would have guessed one that size could be moved. Whew! I might look for one that size as well.

Thanks. You'll definitely need a lot of very heavy duty suction cups and at least 2 dollies. I don't think it would be possible to do it without either of them... and of course manpower. If I was going to do it again I would've waited for a couple more friends. I thought my buddy was going to get a third ball he was lifting so much attempting to put it on the stand. He turned purple.

Good looking tank and great job moving it! That stand looks a little light IMO given the weight it will be supporting.

I agree... but the stand weighs a lot. 300lbs or so I would guess. It's held the tank for almost 4 years and doesn't show any signs or wear, or warping.... just a bit of surface rust i'll remove and repaint.

Thanks.

Great looking tank, what's going in it? Personally I would have just paid some movers to take care of it fore me for the peace of mind, but I'm glad to see you got it taken care of without incident.

I tried. I really did. I had movers walk away from it once, and then no show a second time. No one would move it for less than $700. I had other moving quotes that were over $2000. To my surprise most movers will not touch a glass tank this size/weight even though grande pianos cost 10x this amount and are the same weight while being fragile as well.

I think I'm going to probably try to combine my current stock in my 180g (SA/CA cichlids with clown loaches) with a 12" Mbu Puffer that's for sale locally. I would probably sell the cichlids if the Mbu gets bossed around. I have a feeling it will work though since the tank is so large and none of them are very aggressive currently. It might change by the time I get it all plumbed and ready to go though. We'll have to wait and see :)

Since this got necro-bumped I'm going to chime in. As a piano moving company owner I can tell you a properly padded and secured grand piano is far less fragile than you think. Having the proper equipment makes all the difference. I would use a skid board to slide a piano up or down stairs, which you could possibly use on a big aquarium. A grand is narrower than my shoulder width, whereas a tank is probably going to be 24-30"+. My equipment has places to attach pulling straps and has handles as well.
