Who is to blame?

A friend buys a bass from me but brings his own water . Prior to this transaction, my bass was one of the pack nice and healthy some war wounds but still a soldier.He then adds some my tank water to the bag and takes the fish home . The fish is placed in his tank an goes belly up 15 minutes later. Who is to blame? Seller or buyer?

I would say buyer. Once it is their possession and healthy it is their fault. Sounds like poor acclimation to me and poor transportation. Did they have an air pump running during transport? How long was acclimation?

Definitely the buyer is at fault here.
Maybe the OP should read this and learn how to acclimate and transport.

I dont care if the drive is 5 minutes.
When transporting cichla I always use an air pump!
Fish should have been acclimated as well.
Shouldnt of had his water in the bag...should have been all your tank water.
And then slowly added his tank water for acclimation once he was home.
Rookie move.
Both parties should learn here.
Educate your non experienced buyers when your selling your prized fish.

Agree 100%. Both parties are at fault. He brought his own water, but you let him use it. You should have had him dump it out and put your own water in.
 
The only thing the seller should do is fast the fish preparing for the transport.

X2, and G knows that I know how to transport cichla.
 
Always use an air pump and tank water from the tank the fish came from. I've had fish shipped and gone and picked them up hours away as well. Never had an issue. Slow drip your tank water into the fish bag or bucket for about 15-20 mins net the fish and put him in should have no issues. I've never had any anyway
