I've never owned a fish with it but the species that I see with it most commonly is Ocell(and its sub sp.), Temensis, and Azul and pretty much in that order from most commonly seen to least.

Is there any chance that this poll can be given a second question about ALL the types of Cichla owned, in addition to what actually gets sick with HITH? If ocells are super common in the hobby, then 'more' ocells with HITH will be reported, even if the attack rate is the same. The /percentage/ of what type of pbass (3 of 10, versus 7 of 10, for example) gets HITH will be more informative as to whether or not it is species/variety specific. We'd have to also go into the #s of each type everyone has kept...

Good points, I will see what we can do.

Cmon guys!
DOnt be girl dogs! Join in on the poll.
Its not possible to see who voted for what.....Even if it is....these answers will hopefully sum up a conclusion for us.
As cichla keepers we need to try and keep our bass as healthy as we can.
Are they any keepers out there w/ 20"+ azuls, tems or occels that DONT have HITH?
If so, what are you doing different?

I think the need for black water is largely overlooked. All of these big species come out of water that has high tannin levels. Could this be the main factor in keeping HITH at bay?

I've never seen a kel, orino, or a pure mono with it but what causes it in your opinion?

I second that isde.

I had 20-21" orino's in w/ the azuls that had HITH and the orino's were flawless!
NO case of HITH at all!

Ive stated why I think HITH occurs in our home aquaria.

Well, in regards to the cause it's more or less the 3rd party affects i.e nutrition & water quality. It may be possible that certain species are more prone to it however I disagree when it comes to some not being susceptible at all. Either way, based of a couple studies it looks like "Activated Carbon" is a major possible cause. Other sources state that it's linked to over crowding, nutrition, lack of oxygen, and nitrates. (all of which being generic examples vs. specie specific vulnerability)

Conclusively, it looks most Cichlids can develop the illness, and will depending on the conditions. As far as treatment goes, there is probably a plethora of that information on the web as well.

I haven't used carbon in any of my tanks since the 90's and I still had it in two of my cichla a year or so ago. As I stated in another thread I think multiple factors can cause it.
