Which would you recommend the Armatus or scomberoides?

I meant to quote this with my last post... but in reguatds to what others said able the scomb, I know first hand that they need the best quality water and food to live longer than a year. Mine recently got beat up my my datnoid and tiger and has scares now. Ive done a water change every week with acidic water and high current and was just recently able to get it off of love food. He don't eat as much now but in time I think he will given it is away from danger. It is also a little over a year old. I've had it since it was 1.5" long. Great fish those scombs. We'll see if it makes it longer than two years.

This right here has always been a hunch for me...... I too have liquid rock. I've tried Armatus on 3 occasions and failed every time. I moved during the first one to a town with even harder water and quickly lost the first, and never had as good of luck with all that followed.

I've never found anyone that has raised an Armatus with any sort of luck in anything much higher then 8 for PH. The people that seem to have the best luck are on the coasts or around the great lakes.

Danny when you lost yours did they develop what we refer to as the Characin stupor? Trouble holding themselves upright, and erratic darting, almost a "drunk swim"????

I've always thought it either has to be diet or water, but figuring out which it is will take teamwork from all of us..... :) It's definitely a puzzle that NEEDS to be solved cause I think we are all huge fans of these fish.

Dude, funny thing is, 2 weeks ago, I took some water out of my armatus tank to refill a tiny fish bowl. For some reason, my armatus started to freak out and dart around the tank. A saw him barf some food out from previous days. After 10 minutes, he did a "death roll" and tons of drunken flips. He was lying on his belly at 5 second intervals. I thought he was a goner for sure.

Now the weird and miraculous part was that after 10-15 minutes of this, my armatus started to "stable" up and swim normally with no meds or such. IDK WTF happened but my armatus was back from the death. Right now he is just any normal and "healthy" looking fish.

Any experiences like this where an armatus survived 95% death?

I didn't experience any of that. I rushed into payaras. I got excited with collecting all the ATF so I went ahead and tried to get all the payaras

They were all in different tanks with the same water. My cynodon gibbus got fungus and melted. Even with medication. Same with my rhaph vulpinus. My two baby armatus on the other hand was in with my ATF. They basically swam vertical with the noses on the bottom of the tank. They just eventually died with no explanation

Thats really weird Lix, but I think the drunken stupor DB mentioned doesnt happen quick like that ... it took a few days for mine to die, and it was gradual progressivly getting worse ... I'd def be concerned though Lix, and check your water params to be sure ... maybe he just gave himself a good knock on the head and needed a few mins to recoup

I live in the mountains in central Missouri, I have liquid rock water as well. My payaras never thrived in my tanks until I started running peat filtered blackwater which softened and acidified the water.

My ATF on the other hand have always thrived. They are from hard, slightly alkaline water just like we have here in MO.

I think we're on to something here.

yup he's perfectly fine now. Just he just knock his head pretty bad that day and had to recover for a few minutes.
