rtc x tsn hybrid attacked my tsn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so i guess then he will outgrow and eat my tsn and also i would like to know why m tsn has stopped growing i got him at 5 inches 2 months now he is 9 now he seems to have stopped growing and also eats little every day he used to eat a lot pellets, chicken, beefheart and shrimp now he only eats a little bit of chicken

I would put the TSN back in the pond and slow down the hybrid's growth for awhile since you already have it out of the pond. Also I would cut the chicken and beef heart out of your fishes' diet. Stick with pellets, fish, and shrimp. Maybe cut back to three heavy feedings a week for the pond and two small feedings a week for the hybrid. The TSN should catch up pretty quickly and hopefully won't have any more issues with the hybrid when you put him back in the pond later.

thanks that might work but see the problem is when i put the tsn in the pond he hides. i used to have 2 more tsn in the pond as well around 15 inches but the problem was during the first 4 months they never grew as they never ate they always hid. after they started coming to the surface to hand feed only then they grew fast. now they are in a 8 x 4 tank with my friend there 20 inches long on pure feeders.

also sorry for the mistake pond is not 8000 gallons its 800 gallons

That was going to be my question. Hardly you'd have territorial problems in an 8000 gal.

As Houie stated, I'd not feed non-aquatic foods to my fish. It is doable but too many precautions and too risky. You might have messed up TSN's digestion with chicken and beefheart, even if you tried your very best to remove all fat. And if you have not at all, then there is your likely source of TSN's appetite problems.

Overall, I am a bit surprised by all these attacks by the hybrid. I've owned about a half a dozen of them, from 3" to 3'. Never had any territorial aggression from them, not in a 55 gal tank, not in a 4000 gal pond and they were commed with literally hundreds of diverse tank mates. There must be something that triggers your hybrid that we might need to try to understand.

My hybrid would always tear the caudal fins off anything I put in with him and kill them. Didn't matter what I did or what size the fish was. But of course I never got a chance to put him in a multi thousand gallon enclosure before my ex killed all my fish. IME they can be quite territorial. I think honestly it depends on the individual fish and the size of their enclosure. I never had any issues housing multiple rtc and tsn together but others on here have. Strange, but each fish will differ slightly in behavior.

sorry about your fish why did she kill them in the first place. the hybrid seems to have stop attacking others but he is still outgrowing my tsn thats the biggest problem

He looks good but the exterior appearance will not tell you if he has fatty deposits around his liver and such or other digestive problems. However, if he has a tummy like this for several days after a good feeding, instead of the usual 1-2 days in which period it should flatten, that'd tell me he is not digesting quickly enough and may be a bit backed-up.

If he has a tummy like this all the time - that's fat deposits... or a constant bloat, or an intestinal clog. In the last two cases, fish would never eat until it is resolved.

There isn't a TSN I know of who would not take fish, shrimp, etc. other aquatic fleshy foods - this is their normal, staple food in the wild. You just need to starve him a bit, usually takes 1-2 weeks or less. Very, very rarely it could take longer. I'd be not afraid to starve him for months if he is that stubborn. Just keep offering what YOU want him to eat once a week until he breaks.

Cliff's report is true but his 3' hybrid resided in a 300-500 (?) gal pond. Hence, it was destroying all other cats put with him. Still a little bit surprising IMHO (because my experience is not all-encompassing, of course; our collective experience is) but explainable.

Yeah my hybrid didn't start doing that until it was 26". Then it wanted all other fish to be gone from the 350 gal pond. 6' dia round. He was definitely an alpha fish lol. The person I got him from had him housed in a 180 with like 100 fish in it. He was 14" when I got him. I had him housed with 2 other hybrids initially and he killed one so I removed the other one to a 75 gal, but it just wasn't big enough and it died before I could get it into a proper sized tank during a power outage. As a note also when you add fish during the day the behavior you see shouldn't be considered a success. My hybrid would let anything be put in during the day but at night he would kill them. So when I tried to add my RTC in with him I took him out for a week and rearranged his pond in hopes that he would lose his territory. The rtc was put in first to allow it to establish a territory. After a few weeks of being in a tiny pond solo I put the hybrid in with the RTC. Seemed fine until that night I caught him trying to tear into the RTC chasing it relentlessly around the pond. I had to remove him in the middle of the night. So I put the hybrid in the smaller 300 gal pond by himself along with random oscars people would bring to me. He only ate a couple of those.

Ehh I won't get into why too much, but when you live with a psycho you can expect the unexpected. She really didn't want a divorce and had a mentality that she has to get you back for anything and everything so her reaction to me wanting a divorce was to kill all my pets.
