Bingo! Many oscars, plecos, goldfish, piranhas and silver dollars are not monster-sized types like RTC or an adult pacu and yet they got dumped into the waters or just don't care for them.

Which all comes back to personal responsibility.

There are too many freedom restricting laws already, the Gov should not put there nose in these types of things, they have a bad record for the laws already on the books.

pretty much yeah....its all personal responsibility.
I don't see anyone mentioned about brackish water shark-cats and bettas in inappropriate tanks.

I think the Government should regulate the LFS, not the hobbyist who wants to keep their fish. It's like before they sell fish they are required to educate their customers, also their employees before they hand any kind of fish. To be knowledgeably capable of giving the right info about the fish need's and the basics of fish keeping... It may be done by giving reading materials, just a little piece of pamphlet would do. Simply as that, not to halt your rights to own a fish, but to inform those people who will have a 'fish to keep' that it's not just a Birthday surprise gift-alive-for-now to dead fish/dumped fish later on.

(I'm not gonna answer those guys who will argue we're keeping water...)

Here at most lfs started to educate people about caring for fishes before buy and they will try to convince you that you cannot care for fish if they will feel so..problem is that customer goes through the door and go to different lfs where just sell the fish..

:banher: Ban them. :banhim:

I think that would be applicable for people who doesn't understand the meaning of self-discipline,
"oh humanity why thou run stupidity? whence education rung into thy ear..."
Again as other people said in this thread, it will go back to personal responsibility.

So if it is up to the lfs to police it, how else will that standard be applied over the retail sector? You going to ge McDonald's to educate people about obesity? Ford to teach people how to drive?

I think it is a good idea for the lfs to have educated staff who can offer basic stocking advice when selling fish, and perhaps in extreme cases of blatant negligence refuse a sale, but the onus must be on the individual to learn about the animals they wish to keep and house them appropriately. Where the government comes into it is by providing laws to protect all animals from mistreatment and prosecute those who don't care for them adequately.

Too much generalization and we would be off board. Mc Donald's wouldn't have a live chicken and be disastrous to invade and destroy an eco system. Government regulates driving.

That's where animal cruelty and abuse comes in. It's already legislated, domesticated pets are already covered by each respected state, dunno exactly how the author(s) of the said laws concerns about anything as labeled, "fish in the house".

Ban them all!

Snakeheads have over run the Potomac.

I will not go into who were the responsible parties for the viable breeding populations of the Northern Snakehead in the Maryland waterways. Here is a wealth of research put together and the first draft of the "management" plan for the invasive species.

http://www.fws.gov/northeast/maryla...anagement Plan for the Northern Snakehead.pdf

Again I stress that I am not pointing the finger at any group especially the Monster Fish Keepers.

With that said, I will say with the most serious ire that I can muster that it was NOT Maryland Fishermen (Recreational or Commercial) that share a shred of blame for the massive challenge that the guilty group(s) have caused.

I simply cannot fathom how "responsible Monster Fish Keepers" can feel good about the legal penalties up to and including imprisonment imposed upon we Maryland recreational fishermen for the "catastrophic" invasion caused entirely by others.

Wow, just wow. I love how it is AOK with the board (except for me and two other votes to ban) to shirk your responsibilities off on other groups when you fail miserable!

It is darn near as serious of an offense to fish for our favorite "toothless mouth" game fish Morone saxatilis, accidentally hook a Channa argus and cut our fishing line not wanting to risk bodily injury, as it is to just import the darn things and release them into the waterways ourselves.

Why must Humans always insist on myopia in every aspect of life and refuse to accept responsibility in any? It would seem to me to be counter productive to the extreme not allowing the sale of the (non-live) invasive snakehead meat in the supermarkets.

1. Create a market for the food product establishing demand.
2. Make the sale of Channa argus meat extremely affordable yet profitable in the mainstream food chains.
3. Turn the commercial fishing fleet loose on the supply and watch the Channa argus population dwindle and become manageable.

Simple as ABC, yet the best approach to the MD. government seems to be imprison recreational fishermen for the mess others create.

Commercial gill netters take too many striped bass from the Chesapeake, No problem, shorten on cancel the hook and line season for the recreational fishermen. I do so love them!

Im neither for or against it. My question is why should fish get special treatment. People buy great danes and live i small aprtments and dont walk the dog, is that any better? Or people buy a golden and leave it chained in the backyard to a small dog house, is that adequate? People buy african greys and keep them in cages as big as the bird and dont let it out. If you want the government to step in in order to make sure big fish get the right treatment then they should do it to all animals. If not ur no better than those morons who say save the cute baby seals but will step on a bug thats yuky but critically endangered.
