4D3: How are you keeping your Nitrates at 0 with that kind of stocking? Lots of plant filtration to scrub nitrates?

Big enough that they cannot be claimed as territory.

And I have a denitrifying filter..the canister suck to the back wall filled with the brown media..

(Excuse the bag of bio media...one of my canister shat itself so I put the media into the tank...)

Good to see you've come up with a solution to keep the Nitrates down. Hopefully you are still doing lots of big water changes to keep the hormone/other chemical levels (that we don't test for) low.

Good luck with the stocking. I know I don't have the nerves or patience to do that. I've seen it work out for some, and it's been a disaster for others with some fish flipping a switch overnight and killing everything after having a stable tank for years. I prefer to stick with single show fish or pairs at this point.

:topic: I know, but bear with me.

4d3, please make a thread of your set up, I wanna follow what's going on with your set up, don't think of me as one of those flamers, hehe, just curious to see what's hot. kudos tho.

Yeah I do about 50% a week. (What other things are you meaning hormones/chemical that are not tested for)

Regarding the fish...wouldn't a6x2x2 look empty and boring with a single fish in it? Do you have a pic?

Fish release hormones and other chemicals into the water column other than just ammonia. Otherwise, there'd be no reason for you to do water changes at all since your ammonia/ni/na levels are 0/0/0 all the time with your nitrate scrubbing filtration. You can see the results of this with people growing out fish. Fish exposed to more of these hormones/chemicals (less water changes) tend to grow slower than fish in tanks where the owner does large frequent water changes (lower hormone/chemical levels).

As for my tank, it's a standard 125 (6'x18"x21"). Pretty close to the same dimensions as a 180. I keep a single 16+" Nandopsis Haitiensis (pic in my avatar) in there with 6 red tail tinfoil barbs. It's a species that you can not do the overstocking thing with. They'll either kill everything, or they'll bloat and die from stress. Plus, he takes up the whole tank as he's pretty dang big/thick.

Black nasty are amazing fish! Can't get them over here, wish I could have one, that would be a fish I would keep on its own.

They are stunning

It'd be expensive to ship them and idk if you have any issues with your country banning them, but I know some people on here breed some very nice Odo's if you ever decided to get one. They are definitely worth the effort.

Am I reading that wrong or are you saying the pots lower nitrate? If they do im off to the garden centre! What other filtration do you have? Tank looks clean considering the quantity of large fish

It works just not with highly predatory fish. If I was to try to add another larger cichlid with my jag no doubt it's dying unless I remove the jag for a minimum of at least 4 days smaller fish he doesn't mess with so long as he can't eat them. Say I wanted to add something along the lines of a red devil only way it's working is if it's a female and mellow And 2/3 the of the jag. Adding small individuals in groups works. So long as they can't be eaten
