Setting up a lil puffer tank for mom

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^ Hahahahaha... yeah if they are giving you info like that, a photo posted on here for an ID would be a much safer bet...

If you do go the route of the south american puffer, they do need regular teeth trimming about once every 6 months even with a crunch heavy diet...

Also, just double check the South American Puffer isnt just a mis-labeled Ceylon puffer, since they require marine conditions :)

I would imagine if I tried shaving the beak of one it would puff lol I wouldn't want my mom doing that either, will most likely either be going with the brackish figure 8 or the malabar pea puffer

Its supposedly not too daunting, but i've never personally tried it so cant really say how easy / hard it actually is :)

Oh nice! I'll have to do moar research. Do you have to shave the Indian dwarves? I'll probably be getting those if any of my LFSs have them, if not I will be going brackish, I've done my research and I'm sure I can handle it and teach my mom well enough to handle it, thanks for the help guys! They told me the figure 8s n spotteds were Freshwater, so that would not have been good if I didn't double check here. That's why I love this site, so active compared to the others I used to be on (since joining here I don't bother with them lol)

I think there is a thread here about teeth trimming for SAP's on here in the stickies section...

But to answer your question, no, pretty much only the south american puffer needs regular teeth trimming, the rest of the species do okay as long as they have some crunchy foods in their diet...

With Indian Dwarf Puffers, you dont need to worry about their teeth over-growing at all as far as i know...

Nice, thanks again for the advice, will most likely be going with a small group of about 5 or 6 (read this helps spread aggression so no single fish is too stressed)

^ Also helps if you get say 1M to 4 or 5 Females...

Males are the aggressive ones which will pick on others... so if you get just 1 male and the rest female, you should have a happy tank of puffers...

okay from what I've read the male dwarves will have the stripe of dots correct? any other distinguishing marks?
