It is my understanding that while Metronidazoles is primaraly used to treat anaerobic gram positive bacteria. Metronidazole is also effective against some protozoa especially internal and external flagellates.

It is Metros ability to disrupt the cell functons of these flagellates that will allow it to attack them both internally and externally with in the system.

If I misunderstand the mechanisum by with it acomlishes this please correct me.

I respect your opinion. For the sake of argument, lets suppose this parasite is transmitted via fecal matter. Ok.... how is metro in the water column going to prevent transmission? We've all seen it....fish poops, other fish either eats the poo or chews then spits out..... so again how is the metro in the water column preventing transmission? How is metro in the water column benefiting anyone in the attempt to cure HITH?

I would add some garlic and vitamins to the food as well as the metro. Treat for 10-14 days. In my experience, when a large cichlid like GT or Oscar show signs of HITH & are still eating, they will continue to eat as metro is added to their food ---- they may eat less but as long as the metro/vitamin/garlic/food combo is the ONLY food given, they will eat. Siphoning the poo out every day and doing large water changes help tremendously.

I just don't like to add antibiotics to any tank without knowing its benefits.

How do I add garlic and vitamins to the food? This sounds good!

Primarily used for gram negative bacteria --- some gram positive bacteria. Yes I know how metro works. All I am saying is metro in the water column has little effect in treating HITH especially if infection/re-infection is through fecal matter, as it has been suggested. HITH is internal and must be treated as such. Also metro in powder form does not dillute well in water -- how efficacious is it really in the home aquaria?

Hi,

Thanks for the advice guys...but which should I be doing?I only have 24 metro tablets left...I can't get any more.

Do I use a tablet a day and soak food and feed it to them, suck the poop out and do waste changes daily?

Or do I feed it to them, add it to the water column and water change every second day?

Also how do I add garlic and vitamins to the food soak?

Also would a permanginate bath help this guy? Should I pull him out the tank before anything else gets infected?

You can use garlic supplement in liquid form. Just add to food.

Vitamins also come in liquid form.

If you only have 25 tablets left and can't get more, then adding metro to the water column is not an option for you. Do suck out the poop daily. Big water changes 50% every 2/3 days. If they are feeding daily, then use the metro in food/vitamin/garlic combo everyday for two weeks. Clean out anything they don't eat immediately as not to foul the water.

I would not take the fella out. More stress = greater vulnerability. As stated before, HITH may be contagious so feed all inhabitants metro in food/vitamin/garlic combo.

is there any garlic i can get from the shop?i dont really want to wait for something to be posted..

can i get garlic powder and mix that with water?

also, when i crush a metro tablet up and soak the food, can i keep the remaining solution and soak the next days food in it?

A bit messier but sure, get regular garlic & some water... put in a blender.. put a little juice over whatever you are feeding.....just juice....don't want garlic pieces/mush in your tank.

Do not keep the solution for the next day. Make new.

mmm i dont have a blender, i have a crusher, maybe if i crush the garlic down and use a pesstle and mortar to mash it up with water, would that do?

I guess with water changes every 2 days and feeding them the food with metro i can get a longer treatment period out of what i have availabe.

if i run out of metro, is there anything else i can use out of the things i have listed in the opening post?

thanks
