Crocodilians in Aquaria

trust me when I say that anything that is not an A.mississippiensis will be aggressive towards more than just food. I have worked with yacares that knew where your hand would be before you did.

If I were you, I would stick to something more managable. How about a Caiman Lizard (Dracaena Guianensis)? Very cool heavily armored semi aquatic lizard that will stay manageable.

I don't need to stick my hands in to clean. And where did you find a yacare caiman?

You shouldn't get one unless you have experience handling large reptiles fully grown they are fast and strong and even a small one deliver a Nast bite plus you need a bigger tank there's no room in there for swimming they need space

I guess I should have watched the video before I commented it said pretty much the same thing but any ways. I started with a 55g tank went to the lfs to get fish and left with a gator not doing any research, it was a impulse buy and listening to the sales person I thought "I got this"(i was young and dumb). the 55 didn't last long moved up to a 125g. I made that work for a few years when it shouldn't have. The lfs said if it got to big bring it back and they would take it wrong they didn't want anything to do with. So in the mean time of trying to get rid of it I set up a enclosure in my basement. It was down there for a while just getting bigger finally it came to a point where no one would take it and unfortunately I had to put it down. When I had it I handle it a lot so it would be familiar with human interaction but it was never tamed per say. When it bit me I wasn't handling it I was cleaning the tank. So at some point you are going to have to handle it getting it in your tank moving it to a bigger tank so if your scared to handle it dont get it. Feeding it is not as cool as you think at first your feeding it pinkies or fuzzies that dont move around then mice but they have no idea what a gator is so they walk right up to it and most of the time it grabs takes into the water drowns it then swallows it whole not very exciting. Then that's when I switched from live food to dead food. My point is I was in way over my head with a gator. I would highly recommend not getting any crocodilian unless you are willing to handle it and have a big enough enclosure from the beginning. Getting that gator was the biggest mistake pet wise that I have ever made. Just don't want some one to make the same mistake that I did...

The whole "I want it aggressive for feeding" thing is interesting. Food response and defensive/territorial behavior is completely different. As far as I know, caiman will not come out of the water like a crocodile or alligator will for food.

With mine, I simply leave a plate of food on his dock over night and it's gone by morning. Handling your animal will not always make it "calm down" either. I'd still like to see the set up you have ready for it...

How the hell are you gonna clean it then? Have mommy do it? You gotta do wc's, pick up poo, clean decorations, etc. It doesn't sound like you're ready for a crocodilian at all.

Have mommy do it? Really? I would get an automatic water changer. Pm me if you have a problem with me.

I hope you are loaded with cash and free time as grown up croc demands those two :) good luck with project and i hope everything turns out fine - you and the croc :)

Automatic water changes do not work with crocodilians. It might to keep fresh water going, but you need to scrub down the entire tank on a monthly basis MINIMUM to keep algae down and just an all around clean and healthy living are. I am sorry but so far you have shown very little knowledge about these animals, that is why so many people are not respecting you and telling you to stay away from them.

Know one will stop you buying a caiman, but you need to know in yourself if this animal is right for you and you want to dedicate a small part of your life to it, or if you are just getting it because it looks "cool".
