Ok guys, we've all been preaching for a long time now that when mixing an army and any type of ATF, the ATF needs to be quite a bit larger than the ATF for the match to be a success. Max is now a foot long. I'm wondering if he's big enough that I can safely get away with the army not catching up or taking a very long time to catch up. I figure I'll get an armatus about 5" and have to have him in a growout for a little while, I have a growout running and I'm fine with that. I understand that armies slow down quite a bit after a foot in length, but the specific questions that I have are as follows:

Is Max large enough that he will be able to hold a size parity or a size advantage with the armatus, or will the armatus quickly pass him up? In the next year, Max will at absolute most be 18" and likely significantly less. Will the army grow fast enough after hitting a foot to outpace that 6" a year figure of the GATF?

If Max doesn't have enough of a size advantage, what do you armatus guys feel would be the ideal size to wait for for Max to be able to maintain size parity or an advantage?

Armatus has always been on my to do list, I just want to do it right. :)

I wish I could help :-(. An army will undoubtedly catch up to Max though. There may be enough of a size difference now though, that it may not matter when it comes down to it. In the end, it's a risk no matter what.

Oh there's always a risk when mixing fish that have a mouthful of shanks! lol

I'm just hoping to give Max as much of an advantage as possible. I know if I had gotten them at the same time, Max would have gotten eaten about six months ago. I'm not overly familiar with the growth rate of armies after 12" though. I'm curious if it would be a better idea to just hold off for another six months or so before getting one!

Thanks guys!

i say armatus can grow to 12 inches in one year. For Fang, he is only 11 or so inches after one year. There are people who has said that their armatus has grown to 16-18 inches in one year! :WHOA:
Not going to doubt that considering proper care and a ton of feed.

I think you can add a 6 inch armatus now as max is over 12 inches. I would actually worry that Max would actually bully the armatus. Thats just me. You see, i've always wanted to add ATFs with my armatus but Fang is already 11 inches so i have no luck in finding a large ATF. i have no experience in this combo. Just research stuff. i've made some thread in the past similar to this.

Even if you had the ATf and armatus at the same size, havok can still break loose. I can recollect several instances such as Payarakeeper's batch. He has kept his armatus with several large ATFs with success for just under a year. I don't have too much detail since it's his fish not mine.

here's a nifty link that I would like to share: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...dates-on-recently-aquired-Armatus-(1-Viewing)

I bumped it up a while ago but no one seems to care. lol It shows the potential outcome of a godly Apex characin setup.

This thread pretty much says it all. Grew from 2"-7-8" in 2 months. Then went from 7-8" to 15" in about 5 months with some dead atf's along the way. I would wait, man. Those army's grow scary fast. 2"-15" in 7-8 months? Whoa

haha you got the thread before me! I bumped a while back but no one seemed to notice the thread until now.

Yeah that's one seriously boss tank!

I think I'm gonna wait till next spring to pull the trigger on an army just to play it safe. I'll get one in the next season of imports. I think by then Max should have enough of an advantage to be able to reach 2' at about the same time. That's my ultimate goal.

What do you guys think about a clown knife's growth? I have a shot at a 6" CK at my LFS for $20. It looks really nice and healthy. I don't think it'd be any real threat to anyone, but I'm not really familiar with them other than that I think they're cool. They're not too much of a growth champ, are they?

I've had a Ck that I got at about 5" 2 months ago and it's about 9-10". That being said, it's growth has slowed and is now getting more "girth". Either way, I don't see it posing much of a threat to Max now or in the future.

What are you feeding it? They don't seem like the type to really come out looking for food to me.
