CA Cichlid for a 20g high

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Go with the sajica, convicts are angry little things and more than likely will pick on the mollies even if its a single male with just the three mollies

Honestly I'd go with a trio of Apistogramma. Very stunning fish!

I agree but I am aiming for more of a biotope. Apistos prefer low ph and softer water where as my mollies prefer harder, more alkaline water. I think I will go with just a single Sajica. I can always make room in my 30g for him if I think he looks cramped as he matures. Thanks very much for the help everyone!

I'd love to keep HRP but unfortunately they are not very common where I live. Also, I've heard they can get quite big (8" or so?) I'd probably devote a larger tank to them.

HRP's are essentially a Convict type species from a different collection point (i.e. different coloration- physical characteristics). Under no conditions do they get to be 8" (most don't even get over 5"). Also, there are many online vendors that usually have them in stock for a reasonable price ($5-15 dollar range before shipping). Just saying.

Really? I must have just been misinformed. Either way, I live in the UK so I doubt those online vendors would ship all the way over here. Thanks for letting me know though.

you could do a hrp in a 20 hi, most likely, but having anything else in there with it will be a lottery(no telling if it will work)that's pretty cramped for more than 1 fish.. with rainbows GENERALLY aggression is a little less,,,,, my suggestion is 1 small cichlid ,unless you go dwarf, and your mollies ..AND HOPE IT WILL WORK ,IT JUST MIGHT .. GOOD LUCK:)

Thanks! as I said I have the 30 for backup just in case.

From what I have read, Nanoluteus tend to be smaller than Convicts and are less aggressive. I have read several places now that state they should not be kept with other species that are aggressive as they are a timid in comparison. Also from what I have read they tend to be smaller than Convicts and HRPs with males averaging closer to 4-5 inches and females 3.

I have no first hand experience with them, but have been considering getting some to put in my 40 gallon breeder. So I have been doing some research on them.

I also found this thread here on MFK about keeping them as well ...

Nano's would be the best from a size standpoint, but they are one of two Centrals that are found consistently in softer, acidic waters. They tend to be a little delicate, not sure I'd try them with hard water the mollies need.

IF I were going to try hardwater centrals in a tank that size, I'd stick to rainbows or hrp's.
