I got my first 2 Discus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
 You're probably not gonna like me but here goes, loose the gourami & the bala. Increase the Discus number to at least 5 asap. They are shoaling fish & are most comfortable in groups of 5 or more. Increasing the number will mitigate the single aggression. Bump that temp up to 82/83. Rams & angels will still be ok as long as temp & ph stay constant. There are a number of reputable breeders (some in Cali) that are just a FedEx away. My Discus came FedEx overnite to NY from Md. Simplydiscus.com has a number of sponsors with quality stock. But even if you choose to stay local, you'll increase your chances of success by following the above. Best of luck.

bro, your discus are exactly what i thought they would look like from a fish store. skinny and stunted and bad shape. and your tank setup is not for discus. your tank is to dark...the darker the tank the darker the discus will be and form peppers. and u can see the stress bars as they are stress and trying to blend into the environment. i hope u didnt pay a lot for those. if u cant find a legit breeder near u. def buy online.

check out simply discus forum.

there are lots of great vendors on there that breeds and import nice discus from asia. one of the top vendor on there is kenny chung. here is his vendor page. and u can see what he brings in monthly. and all the thread people make speaks for itself on how nice and good customer service he has

and u can learn everything u need to learn about discus on there.enjoy

 Thanx neighbor. I've been a member for quite some time. Not an expert but trust me they are far from stunted & yes they are from a sponsor. The stress was brought on by the constant flash that day but the fish are fine. here's another shot different camera & day.

my post was clearly for OP not on your discus.

am I wrong in saying a 55g is not big enough for a bala?..

 55g will work for the first few months but these brutes quickly grow to 35cm. They actually do best in groups of 3 or more but you're gonna need an eight ft. tank. "T"

Kool! Hey everybody has opinions, so good some not so. I take both , state my case & accept it for future reference. "T"

Well, I listened to some of your advice. I did get 5 discus and I moved my Bala to my 55 gallon tank. I can't move my dwarf blue gourami to the 55 because I have my dwarf redfire gourami in there and when they were together my redfire almost killed my blue gourami. Anyway it cost me alot of money in meds to bring him back to life and he's doing great his barbells finally grew back and he starting spitting water from the top. He's not aggressive towards any fish accept the 2 german gold rams he chases sometimes but thats it. Since I've taken my petsmart bought plecos out of my 150 gallon I've been having problems with algae growth. I found a breeder that says he has plecos that don't latch to discus and only grow up to six inches. He also has snails that cannot reproduce and also eat algae. So I'm going to pick a few up this Sunday. He also breeds Discus in his house. Inlandempirediscus.com He says he just got 7 new discus in and one looks like a Carnation Red Tarqouise like the one in your picture. I'm going to buy him and maybe another one if its good looking. So that would put me at 7 discus in this tank. By the way you were right with the number 5 because since I put 5 Discus they don't really fight that much and they all hang out together most of the time. Sometimes there might be a short chase.
