What is a Gorillus Blue?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Gorillus Black and gorillus blue are the same breed..

Black and blue are just names given to them.

You can breed gorillus black and gorillus blue to create the gorillus Umbees with fresh new healthy bloodline.

Close but no cigar. They are not the exact same! The black males have more if a green base, the females have more yellow and more red freckles than the blues. and they don't color up as early as the gorillus blues. The gorillus blue males and females have better blues. Yes they are close on the same family.. Like direct cousins whereas blue freckle umbees are distant cousins to them. I can see to the in-experienced or untrained eye that the gorillus blues and blacks look the same. So unless the person giving advise has either had these umbees, grown them out or has a trained eye to distinguish the differences between locations and variants maybe they should keep their advice to a minimum!

Guys (especially Freshwaterpredators ) I want to thank you for all the info. It was this discussion I was looking for not just a posted link, with lots of great information from those with experience. This is the reason why I am a member of MFK forums. I am sorry this thread has turned into a little bit of an arguing match, I never intended it to be. All I was looking for was knowledge. I could have easily looked online researching (takes as much effort as posting here) but who knows what is out there. I could have also just decided to do nothing, go and find an Umbee and stuff it into a 20 gallon tank, BUT THAT IS NOT MY NATURE. My nature is to be a responsible fish owner and to learn as much as I can before obtaining a new fish. We should be supporting discussion on posts and encouraging to those who want to learn. That being said, @koltsix, I have no hard feelings against you. Although you preceded to tell me that I ignored your post and that I am either ignorant or lazy is irrelevant. I did not post this thread to ARGUE with my fellow fish keepers, I posted it simply to LEARN. I hope you can believe me as there is no way I can convince you. I DO appreciate the link that you sent me, and who knows, I may even look into purchasing from Umbeeking, seeing if I can find a big enough tank lol. Thanks again to everyone for their input :thumbsup:

They get BIG most websites say 36"

well whoever said that tell them to show it to you.. Ask them how they know that. I think 36" is exagerated by nearly foot and that's a lot. The man who intro them to us got the largest. In the wild who knows where the largest one kicks it at or will it ever be seen.

yeah yeah yeah.. Two Midas can have different colors and paterns too, In the future when youre wiser you'll understand common sense. I keep it fish. Seems like youre bitter about something there buddy. Thanks

@Freshwaterpredators - Took a look at your website, the Gorillus Prime are nothing short of spectacular! I'd pick one up from you in a minute if I had the means to house one. Im assuming they need min 250 gallons for a single male?

What I am referring to is the exacts of the fish. Midas are Midas but umbees have a whole new rule to apply. I can see where your coming from but it is very confusing to new hobbiest or new to the umbees. Midas have the genetic piebald mutation and umbees don't. They breed tru whereas Midas can produce multiple variants. I would think you could be better off comparing convicts to umbees in theater of different genetics n species.

To the op- I will be housing a single male in a 180 for the next couple years. But yes long term the larger tank the better. I currently have mine in a 125 and he's 13"

You know what man, maybe I've pegged you wrong as you've been civilized while I haven't been real nice or tactful venting my frustration which I maybe displacing on you with how some seem to just want answers hand fed to them. So I'm going to suck it up and do what I rarely do and apologize, I'm sorry for running off at the mouth and assuming. Personally as I never like to take full responsibility when I'm wrong so I'll put the majority of the blame on me trying to quit smoking as the reason I acted like a bit of a turd. Matter of fact it was after smoking a cig(what can I say I'm weak) I reread the thread and saw that I wasn't acting appropriately or being very understanding, so again I apologize.

@Freshwaterpredators gotta say very nice work on the site those are some awesome pics.

Actually no Jason, that's even less correct than what animal guy stated. There are numerous fish within the amphilophus genus that are considered "midas" by hobbyists and researchers in the field, as clearly demonstrated in my sticky on F1 Midevils. In fact, in the case of amphilophus it is FAR more confusing (even among the experts) as to what fits where.

As previously stated;
Gorillus blue (along with Gorillus BLACK) are two new color variants of Caquetaia umbriferus. They are the same species just collected in different parts of Colombia.

Unless you or someone else has something further to offer up, the "gorillus" are simply different geographical variants of the same species.
