Why I don't frequent local (or chain) fish stores

Biz is biz even in the pet trade. Supply and demand

What exactly is that supposed to mean?

Clearly there's a demand for all of these various goods, and the problem isn't in LFS ability to supply them. The problem is a bit more complicated than simply a supply/demand equation.

Most of the online stores I've seen or purchased from have some monsters (arowannas, rtc, gar, etc) for sale. I wouldn't clump all local stores together into a bad category. I've had great experiences and horrible ones from places like petsmart/petco. At least if a person is buying a monster at a lfs there is a *chance* a real person can discuss the tank requirements with them. That never happens if the purchases are online.

i personally do not clump LFS with petsmart or petco. I see them as a chain stores. I see LFS as a mom and pops store. while I love a great Mcdonalds burger, if i want a real good burger i will hit a local established restaurant, not a chain.

but this is what I face for a living. In the music business, illegal downloading is actually something we figure into the math, and its a moving target. It's ever changing because of advancements on both sides of the computer. We spend money on technology to try to keep people honest, but hey getting a free song every now and again isn't really stealing is it? It's just a song right?

I'm living the changing of the guard in the music business. Been living it for 20 years. CDs are old and passé and everyone wants music in small doses and or/free. As an industry, the artists have had no choice but to adapt to survive. As much as its sad to see our local record and cd stores go, it doesn't change the fact that it's how I make my living and I have a choice. A)quit B) sit around and hope for the best or C) adapt and change. There are no other options.

Change isn't easy either and oftentimes it doesn't come cheaply, but oftentimes necessary. I don't see how the blueprint of old "can" compete at all in today's age. Not with the growth of the Internet the way it is and the speed of business in the world today. In any business for that matter and as many problems as the computer solves, it creates potential for just as many problems.

My cousin works for Pixar. He's an animator and he's seeing it more than ever in his industry. Theft(piracy) is built into their math too, but obviously they are doing something right, as they continue to grow.

Crooks are like cockroaches. They just are....

One thing you'll never get from an online order is the ability to observe the fish first hand. I will pay extra to see the fish in person.

And I'm seeing a lot of "bad info" comments aimed at chain stores. The exact same can be said of online shops - even the big/popular sites are FLOODED with bad info about the fish they are selling.

The analogy of the music industry while having some similarity does not have the same inherent issues. Music is music people will want music no matter what, how they get it may change and the industry must adapt to satisfy these changes. The difference here is there will always be a demand and mass appeal. The aquarium hobby is a much smaller world, with the same pitfalls and a dwindling influx of new blood. Without LFS there will be no knew hobbyists, there will always be people seeking music.

True, but if lfs aren't stocking anything out of the norm then you won't be seeing them or buying them.

You're right John, crooks are like cockroaches. I guess I was only offering up what many hobbyists fail to see from their side of the monitor. In your industry I can't even begin to imagine how bad it has become over the past decade.

^^ true, but I've yet to see a lot of any fish I truly want first hand in a lfs. I'd love to walk into a store and see wc Vieja or ornatum or a Festae, but I don't.

I'm also in the minority when it comes to those species, so it does come with the turf.
