My 12x4x4 1400 gallon cichlid tank

Please update with how you plan to insulate this when you get the chance. I like everything about the idea of a concrete tank. Insulating it to hold heat is my only concern. I'm afraid it would be expensive to heat a concrete tank

Oh no quite the opposite. Concrete itself is an excellent insulator. I could heat this tank with 2 300w heaters quite easily even with a 10 degree heat difference between the room and tank. Only place that heat escapes from much at all is the top which I have semi insulated with foam board insulation. You've got to think, 8" of concrete is very dense and way better insulating wise than even really thick acrylic.

Hmm I've worked with concrete quite a bit I guess I just never realized it had insulating qualities. I think I'm sold on the idea of a concrete tank then lol thanks for the reply

Ya it's the only way to go if you have a place to do it IMO. And there are always ways to improve it. If you are looking for even more insulation all it would take is to frame around it and insulate just like you would a wall.

Woo this is awesome Trace. love that umbee.

I wish I had the skills to do a cement tank =(

Thank you. And I would sell myself too short if I were you. It was reall y simple to build and you or anyone else that wants to tackle it feel free to ask questions because I'm more than happy to answer them and walk you through it.

Awesome tank! I am considering a large build myself and since I have a lot of experience in concrete it will definitely be my medium of choice. The only problem is the permanence. If I ever move I guess the tank would have to be torn down. Thanks
It actually adds value to your home so it would be a selling point, not a hassle.
