Wallago leerii growth rate?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got it from a seller http://www.amazontropicalfishllc.com/ already at about 1.5'. He grew little and slow in the year or so that I had him due to feeding probems etc. as you read or perhaps it is their nature - my miniscule experience is not enough.

Yeah, I remember vaguely about Michael's leerii killing a big arapaima too, you are right.

Again, you can see this over and over again about Wallagoes, other "highly aggressive" fish - Hemibagrus like ARTC, wyckii, etc.: it's a risk and risk, by definition, is that the (un)desirable outcome may or may not occur as so much is dependent on the ever so greatly varying circumstances, tank set up, size, tank mates, sizes/ages, sexes, tank dynamics, feeding, etc. etc. etc.

BTW, here is Michael's input on the death of his 3' yarelli, in case you have not seen it: http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=31656&hilit=+leerii

Im pretty sure there are a lot of guys smaller than the goonch in the mega but why the goonch of all fishes eludes me. Im currently building a roughly 12x8x4 aqua pond of my own but is taking real time due to the typhoons here in the pacific.

I initially planned for it to go to that tank along with some other big ones but, i guess i have to get it over 18" first. And from inference alone, it might take a year or so.

I am currently contemplating on putting him in that tank in the future but im being quite disheartened by what happened to sir michael's gigas and goonch.

However, my 1.5" wc leerii is of quite a character. It does not hide at all and is an avid eater. He is rarely seen moving on days but quite active at night. Im keeping tabs on how many fish (we culture my feeders) he eats, and hes eaten 5 pcs already in 2 days.

I am hoping to see growth by weeks as i would presume that juveniles would grow a bit faster.

Excellent! Post pics and make this a grow-out thread for all of our sake.

Why goonch? I think it was not a predatory killing, same with the pima. Michael said it killed plenty more. These are territorial killings, I am sure. Smaller ones are killed for food.

Anyway, I am eager to learn with you as you go. Good luck, bro!

How fast do these beasts grow?:)

Not sure how fast they take to get to 30cm. However Viktor (Thebiggerthebetter) studies catfish like few others in this hobby and I believe is very accurate in his belief of 1 to 2 years (15 to 30cm in the first year). Viktor moved to Florida a couple of years ago and purchased 7 acres to build a public Aquarium specializing in catfish.

My female I purchased at 28.4cm in 1991 and she is now about 154cm.

The male I purchased at 38.4cm in 1999 and he is now between 122 to 134cm. The variance is due to several friends estimates who have either swam in the tank or observed the fish by boats in the tank over the past 2 years.

Bob all the best in keeping your fish a long time and growing it to a large size.

I will include the 4 pics of the female taken by my buddy Rusty Wessell when he visited me 2 years ago. You have probably have seen these when I posted them before but newer MFK members might not have.

The wall she is crossing over is 30.5 cm wide.

Hey Michael, a rare treat to hear from you! You humble me with your comments.

Bob is slacking and/or scattering data in different threads :) so here is his update: "Wallago Leerii 11" 3 months" and a photo http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?556466-My-MONSTER-cats-)&highlight=leerii

Sounds like a great growth rate, from 1.5" to 11" in 3 months. Am I right, Bob?

WOW! I cant believe i just saw this now! Haha! Been a crazy ride with my midterms, typhoon haiyan, my daughter and whatnot! Anyhoo, the growth slowed a bit for the leerii:( i havent measured him but his almost up to 2' (rough estimate)

I'd have to say mine's particularly "less"aggressive. Havent killed anyone yet and still with the other cats:)
